New Updates Including Visual Overhaul In The Works For MTG Gatherer Website

Classic MTG resource to receive long-awaited updates

Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has announced a series of updates for the Magic: The Gathering database website, Gatherer.

First launched in 2004, Gatherer served as the go-to resource for all things Magic related for over a decade. Players and collectors alike relied on Gatherer to quickly reference cards, stay up-to-date on Oracle changes, find judge rulings, and more. But while Magic as a whole continued to grow and evolve, Gatherer began to fall behind, and by the mid 2010’s, the site was experiencing a sizable exodus.

Citing inconsistent updates and outdated visuals, users sought out third-party sites that were actively improving upon the foundational pieces Gatherer had laid. Despite the ongoing struggle with visual and interface antiquity, WotC prioritized keeping the database’s contents current – adding new cards and other key information with each new product and expansion – and now, it seems WotC is prepared to tackle a much larger update to the classic MTG resource.

Announced yesterday, the first step in a series of larger updates for the site is a visual overhaul that aims at making Gatherer feel “…cleaner, more modern, and easier to use—whether you’re on desktop, a tablet, or your phone.” These visual updates will be rolling out in phases over the next few weeks and may undergo changes before reaching finality.

According to WotC, the visual update is just the beginning of a larger initiative to revitalize the Gatherer website over the next year.
