I found the first pick of this draft really tough… there were five cards that I’m happy to first pick. After consulting with some other people whose opinions I respect the consensus seems to be Firespout. In fact they called me crazy for taking Mirrorweave. I was under the impression that Mirrorweave is an absolute bomb since every time I’ve had it it’s been awesome and I’ve lost to it probably more than any other card in the set. After that pick I didn’t have many decisions to make since the best card in most of the packs put me into Blue and a splash. I could’ve tried to delay taking a second color but the strategy of trying to get into an enemy combination and praying for pack 3 has not impressed me thus far.
As for deckbuilding I figured I had a lot of evasion so I just wanted something to stall. The last card was between Parapet Watchers and Barrenton Medic. I figured that the Medic would do a better job of holding people off and I already had a very full three slot.
I played against a reasonable mono Red deck in the first round and neither game was pretty close. I was able to slow his early dudes with Safehold Sentry and Ballynock Cohort. When I played the Medic he was stopped cold and and Inkfathom Infiltrator and a flyer did the dirty work. In the second game I got him to 16 with an Infiltrator then with 4 creatures in play I targeted his Ashenmoor Gouger with Mirrorweave and that was that.
Round 2 I played against a Black White deck with a bunch of average creatures and not much removal. I had a slow draw in the first game so he got me to two before I took over with some tappers and the Medic. Eventually I let him alpha-strike thinking it was going to kill me and I Aethertowed two of his guys. (For the record I’d very likely have won without the Aethertow). Game 2 I had an even slower draw and his Black Initiate finished me off. Game 3 was close but I had Flask and Flow of Ideas in my opening hand so I just traded creatures with him then drew six cards on turn 6. I couldn’t really lose from there.
In the third round I played against Jon Finkel himself. Not much happened in either of the first two games… we each mulliganed in one and took turns not playing spells. The third game was pretty interesting. I got off to a fast start but he slowed me down with Soul Snuffers. It looked like I was going to be able to finish him off but he had Snakeform and Fate Transfer both of which were giant blowouts after the Soul Snuffers. He had taken over at the end but I still had a few turns to draw the Mirrorweave and steal the game. Sadly that didn’t happen.
Until tomorrow…
Rich
