The masses have spoken.

What have they said? “Drafting With X” articles are among the most informative learning tools on the net. It should come as no surprise that when Craig messaged me on AIM last week and asked if I would be interested in doing daily walkthroughs head-to-head with Rich Hoaen instead of a regular column I gladly agreed. A little friendly rivalry can’t hurt and it surely can’t hurt my Limited game to be forced to do at least five drafts a week.

2 Hungry Spriggan
1 Groundling Pouncer
1 Splitting Headache
2 Gift of the Deity
1 Odious Trow
1 Devoted Druid
1 Boggart Ram-Gang
1 Wildslayer Elves
1 Rite of Consumption
1 Desecrator Hag
1 Incremental Blight
1 Creakwood Liege
2 Scuzzback Marauders
1 Barkshell Blessing
1 Stalker Hag
1 Foxfire Oak
1 Mudbrawler Raiders
1 Quillspike
1 Woodlurker Mimic
1 Morselhoarder
5 Swamp
12 Forest

As far as a good draft to start out this series goes I don’t think I could’ve asked for much better than this. The packs totally went my way and while there were some interesting decisions I liked every choice I made in retrospect. The Stalker Hag pick was relatively close but I think Doomgape is a bit too slow and I think Stalker is better than Desecrator in GB for sure. Rites of Consumption was getting played in this deck whether or not I got the late pick Quillspike as it is still a game ender with 2x Scuzzback and Foxfire Oak.

Round 1 was humorous to say the least. My opponent was UB. Game 1 I opened with Odious Trow into Boggart Ram-Gang and started attacking past his Thistledown Duo. He added Watchwing Scarecrow and I played Scuzzback Marauders. With Rites of Consumption and Foxfire Oak in hand I felt like he was basically dead already. He ended up River’s Grasping my Marauder and making me discard it but I just drew into Stalker Hag and Creakwood Liege and beat him pretty easily from there. Game 2 before I even knew what had happened my opponent had mulliganned to four cards on the play and conceded.

Round 2 my opponent was WR and I lost game 1 when he played turn 2 Somnomancer turn 3 Steel of the Godhead. I’d already drawn both Quillspike and Rites of Consumption but the Devoted Druid never came to pull it out. Game 2 I played some guys he created a Duergar Assailant with Scourge of the Nobilis and not too much happened. Eventually he Firespouted the board and I played out Morselhoarder and Foxfire Oak and killed him with Rites. Game 3 I played turn 2 Druid turn 3 Quillspike and he got stuck on two Plains and conceded.

Round 3 I was doing well in game 1 with two Scuzzbacks on board when my UGW opponent dropped Godhead of Awe somehow and I drew a few bricks and lost. Game 2 I played Creakwood Liege on turn 4 and he drew his only answer in Biting Tether. He went on to play a Wickerbough Elder but thankfully tapped out and I killed him with Gift of the Deity. Game 3 he got a nuts draw again stealing my Creakwood Liege which was my first play of the game and I couldn’t come back against his four guys (including Mistmeadow Witch).

Overall this was definitely one of the best decks I’ve drafted in the format. I hope you enjoy this walkthrough series as I’m very excited about it.

Until tomorrow…

Nick
