Daily Financial Value Of Magic 2015 (6/26)

Day four of Magic finance guru Ben Bleiweiss’s Daily Financial Value Of Magic 2015 article series sees the addition of a powerful new Mythic Rare, a new Avacyn, and several announced reprints!

Welcome to the fourth day of Magic 2015 Spoilers! There were a few new Rares and one new Mythic spoiled overnight. A lot of previously-spoiled cards have moved in value, so please read through to the changes section to see all of the prices that have changed!

How I review:

Starting Price: The first price we assign to the card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price (Short Term): The price I believe the card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Magic 2015.
Future Price (Medium Term): The price I believe the card will be at by the time the next set (Khans of Tarkir) comes out.
Future Price (Long Term): The price I believe the card will be at a year from now, when M16 is released.

Avacyn, Guardian Angel

Starting Price: $3

Current Price: $3

Future Price (Short Term): $2

Future Price (Medium Term): $2

Future Price (Long Term): $2

Avacyn, Angel of Hope is a $30 Mythic Rare that has a great appeal to both casual players and as a one-of in Reanimator decks. This Avacyn has three things working against her:

1) Rare instead of Mythic Rare

2) Avacyn, Angel of Hope had an ability that could lock down the entire board. Avacyn, Guardian Angel does not.

3) Avacyn, Angel of Hope protected itself (granted itself indestructible). Avacyn, Guardian Angel can’t target itself.

With that said, Avacyn is a popular Magic character. Angels are a popular Magic type. Between the two, and between the abilities on Avacyn being good enough, this won’t end up as a bulk Rare. It probably will stick in the $2-$3 range as a fringe playable Standard card, and as a popular causal card.

Crucible of Fire

Starting Price: $1

Current Price: $1

Future Price (Short Term): $1

Future Price (Medium Term): $1

Future Price (Long Term): $1.50

The Shards of Alara version of Crucible of Fire hit $4 (I dropped it to $3 after the reprint was spoiled). Over the very long term (2-3 years), this bodes well for the reprint version of Crucible, since it has a price history that is 3-4x as high as the current price. For the short term, M15 versions will flood the market putting this on the upper end of bulk range.

Note: This is also very likely a plant for Khans of Tarkir, since that set involves Sarkan Vol and was speculated to have a heavy dragon theme.

Perilous Vault

Starting Price: $8

Current Price: $8

Future Price (Short Term): $12

Future Price (Medium Term): $15

Future Price (Long Term): $15

My vote for the most undervalued card spoiled so far. Mythics have a much higher ceiling than $8, and this is a very playable board sweeper that has applications in Standard, Modern, and casual formats. I think Perilous Vault will at least double in price by the time Khans of Tarkir comes out, so I would recommend picking your copies up now. The closest comparisons I can draw is with All is Dust ($20) and Oblivion Stone ($12, Mirrodin Rare)

Phyrexian Revoker

Starting Price: $3

Current Price: $3

Future Price (Short Term): $2.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $2.50

Future Price (Long Term): $3

A huge part of the Legacy metagame at this point. Was $5 for the MBS version before this reprint, so I expect it to halve in price for the short term, and then start recovering in price as time goes on.

Changes Since Yesterday:

Chandra, Pyromaster: From $10 to $8

Jalira, Master Polymorphist: From $2 to $1

Liliana Vess: From $10 to $8

Sliver Hive: From $3 to $4

Soul of Innistrad: From $6 to $5

Soul of Ravnica: From $4 to $3

Soul of Shandalar: From $10 to $8

Soul of Theros: From $12 to $10

PACK VALUE

To determine the value of a booster pack, I’m going to start with the following formula:

(2R + 1M) / 80

That isn’t enough of a picture though. In fairness, $0.50 to $1 bulk rares don’t really amount to “real” value if you’re looking to trade with other players. So I’m omitting the value of any Rare that is below $2 (rounded from $1.99) and any Mythic that is below $4 (rounded from $3.99).

18 out of the 53 Rares have been spoiled. Here are the ones that are $2 and up!

NOTE: Jalira fell below $2 and is now off this list.

Avacyn, Guardian Angel: $3
Chasm Skulker: $2
Genesis Hydra: $2.50
Ob Nixilis, Unshackled: $4
Phyrexian Revoker: $3
Return to the Ranks: $2
Sliver Hive: $4
Spirit Bonds: $2
Waste Not: $10
Yisan, the Wanderer Bard: $2

Total Rare Value: $34.50

Eleven out of the fifteen Mythic Rares have been spoiled.

(NOTE: Soul of Ravnica has fallen below the $4 threshold and is off this list):

Ajani Steadfast: $20
Chandra, Pyromaster: $8
Liliana Vess: $8
Nissa, Worldwaker: $25
Perilous Vault: $8
Soul of Innistrad: $5
Soul of New Phyrexia: $15
Soul of Shandalar: $8
Soul of Theros: $10

Total Mythic Value: $107

So plugging this into the formula, we get the following:

(2R ($34.50) + 1M ($107)) = $176

$176/80 = $2.20 value per pack, or $79.20 per box.

So today’s value ends up being exactly the same as yesterday’s value, due to two cards being added (Phyrexian Revoker + Perilous Vault) and several cards dropping a dollar here or there in value.

LSV has said he’s spoiled a new Jace at midnight tonight, so we’ll have another new planeswalker to talk about tomorrow!
