Daily Financial Value Of Dragon’s Maze (4/10)

SCG’s finance guru, Ben Bleiweiss returns today to discuss Exava, Teysa, and Renounce the Guilds—the latest preview cards from Dragon’s Maze!

Hello everyone, and welcome back to my daily series of Financial Value articles about the newest set, Dragon’s Maze. Here’s the price evaluation guide again!

Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder

Current Price: The current price of the card, by the time this article goes live

Future Price—Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Dragon’s Maze

Future Price—Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (M14) comes out

Future Price—Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now, when the next spring set is released (Journey Into Nyx)

Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch

Starting Price: $3

Current Price: $4

Future Price (Short Term): $3

Future Price (Medium Term): $2

Future Price (Long Term): $1

I’m looking at a lot of these spoiled cards, and I’m able to pull a price precedent to talk about the long-term values of said cards. In this case, I draw on the price history of Madrush Cyclops. I believe Exava is better than Madrush Cyclops (+1 power and first strike make a huge difference, plus Exava is easier to cast), but in the current Standard, Exava is having to compete with Falkenrath Aristocrat and Hellrider. This by default makes Exava by minimum the third-best choice just for black-red aggressive decks alone; therefore, I just don’t see Exava holding value while Innistrad block is still in Standard. I see Wizards having other four-drops in future sets that are just better for red/black decks than Exava.

Renounce the Guilds

Starting Price: $1

Current Price: $1.25

Future Price (Short Term): $1

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50

Future Price (Long Term): $0.50

Very conditional removal and primed I believe more for Commander play than competitive formats. My personal belief is that in the end, Renounce the Guilds will show up in a few sideboards but often will be outclassed by other spells that white decks can board in.

Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts

Starting Price: $2

Current Price: $2

Future Price (Short Term): $2

Future Price (Medium Term): $2

Future Price (Long Term): $2

Before you move to dismiss Teysa as a seven-mana do-nothing, I’ll draw comparison to two creatures who are similar in scope and have had good success in holding value to casual players: Iridescent Angel and Konda, Lord of Eiganjo. Both the Angel and Konda are casual favorites that are frequently in the $2.50-$4 range. There will be a lot more Teysa out there than either Konda or Iridescent Angel, but Teysa can also do duty as a one-off in Human Reanimator decks in Standard right now.

See you all tomorrow!
