Daily Financial Value Of Dragon’s Maze (4/9)

Ben’s expert financial advice will help you figure out which cards to buy now or later, so make sure you read his analyses on Master of Cruelties, Advent of the Wurm, and Vorel of the Hull Clade!

Hello everyone, and welcome back to my daily series of Financial Articles about the newest set. This time around, we’re going to discuss the third set of the immensely popular Return to Ravnica block—Dragon’s Maze! Since the formatting for this article is slightly different than past Financial Value articles, you’re going to have to look at this guide to my article every…single…day! Muahaha!

Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder.

Current Price: The current price of the card, by the time this article goes live

Future Price—Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Dragon’s Maze

Future Price—Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (M14) comes out.

Future Price—Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now, when the next spring set is released (Journey Into Nyx).

Advent of the Wurm

Starting Price: $4

Current Price: $4

Future Price (Short Term): $6

Future Price (Medium Term): $3

Future Price (Long Term): $3

We’ve seen four for a 5/5 creatures with all upside in the past—Spellbreaker Behemoth immediately springs to mind. Advent of the Wurm works well with populate (which still isn’t seeing serious Standard play) and as a combat trick. As a flash creature, Advent of the Wurm is quite powerful and will end up seeing play for that reason and that reason alone. If this were a sorcery, I think it’d be played but marginally.

I look at the trajectory of Armada Wurm and see a similar price spike—starting low, jumping quite a bit right after release, and then settling down. I believe Advent of the Wurm will have a similar price structure, barring populate going nuts as a mechanic in Dragon’s Maze.

Master of Cruelties

Starting Price: $2.50

Current Price: $5

Future Price (Short Term): $3

Future Price (Medium Term): $1.50

Future Price (Long Term): $1.50

I believe this guy is just a bulk mythic rare. In the hour since he’s been live, other known vendors have bought 20+ copies off us at $2.50-$5 a shot. I believe this is going to be a hardcore bulk mythic rare by the time M14 is released. We’ll see who is right—me or the current market :)

Vorel of the Hull Clade

Starting Price: $2.50

Current Price: $2.50

Future Price (Short Term): $2

Future Price (Medium Term): $1.50

Future Price (Long Term): $3

This is one of those casual cards that is going to have great appeal over time for anyone interested in Commander, but not so much when the supply is very high in the short term. I believe we’ll see these in the $1-$1.50 range around the time M14 is released. If you’re into speccing for long-term value, this is a card I would move in on at that point. Supply will eventually dry up, and this will rise in price consistently over the years.

Updates from Yesterday

Ral Zarek – From $30 to $35: Would not be surprised to see this end the preorder period at $40. Would not be surprised to see it at $20 by the time set redemptions happen.

See you all tomorrow!
