Daily Digest: Making Abzan Fun Again

This isn’t your daddy’s Abzan deck. If you want to reinvent Abzan at the $5,000 Modern Premier IQ, GerryT directs your attention to this crazy deck!

Abzan is kind of fun in Modern, but the whole B/G/X thing is sort of played out. Somehow this deck manages to play most of the Abzan cards that are
effective while finding ways to make it fun again.

Lingering Souls and Path to Exile are the big draws to Abzan, but this deck has no interest in giving its opponent an extra land. It focuses on slowly
grinding your opponent out of the game with Smallpox, Raven’s Crime, and Liliana of the Veil. In the lategame, Haakon, Stromgald Scourge can be used to
cast Nameless Inversion out of your graveyard as much as you want. You can also bring back Knight of the Reliquary to provide a quick clock!

Stinkweed Imp provides a solid blocker, but it’s really there to get your engine jump-started. In basically no time, it will fill your graveyard with Life
from the Loam to go with your Raven’s Crime and some Knights to go with your Haakon, Stromgald Scourges. On top of it all, you’ll hit some Lingering Souls
to provide some much needed time.

Is Burn a tough matchup? Absolutely, but Smallpox, Vault of the Archangel, and Leyline of Sanctity out of the sideboard do pretty good work. Even Raven’s
Crime on the play can go to town on them. It won’t be easy by any means, but beating every single deck in Modern isn’t exactly possible.
