Merfolk has always been on the precipice of success, but this list might actually get it there. It’s no-nonsense and ultimately focuses on what’s
important.
The maindeck is devoid of counterspells and only has a singleton Cavern of Souls. Based on Legacy, these might seem like auto-includes, but things are
different in Modern. There is no free counterspell worth playing, and Modern Merfolk is very interested in casting Spreading Seas, so the colorless mana
from Cavern of Souls doesn’t really help.
Maindeck Relic of Progenitus is a nod to all the Snapcaster Mages and Tarmogoyfs running around in the format, and it’s a card I really like, especially in
decks like this. After all, those are two of the biggest problems, and Relic solves them both.
Tidebinder Mage, Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, and Master of Waves are fantastic against all the Burn and Abzan in the format. Dismember is another answer to
Tarmogoyf (and Siege Rhino), plus it hates on the major combo deck in the format. Overall, this deck looks like it’s well-positioned against a lot of the
top decks in the format.
