Countdown To Grand Prix Charlotte: 11 Days Out – Event Overview!

It’s almost time! In a few short weeks, SCG and the Magic Multiverse will make their way to #GPCharlotte to battle Modern! Cedric Phillips explains the fun that awaits you in Charlotte!

Why hello there! Let me be the first to welcome you to the first installment of the Grand Prix Charlotte countdown blog! This series of blogs will go over anything and everything concerning Grand Prix Charlotte, which, if you’ve ever been to a Grand Prix before, is a lot.

This first entry is simply an overview to give you the rundown about #GPCharlotte and start building the excitement for what’s going to be an awesome Modern Grand Prix. Over the next two weeks, I’ll be going over main event and side event information, artists and cosplayers who will be in attendance, food and lodging options, and much more!

All The Modern You Can Handle!

Modern is a format that I’ve always enjoyed playing. From the first Modern Pro Tour in Philadelphia won by Samuel Estratti with Splinter Twin to the last SCG Tour® Open in Milwaukee won by Joseph Presnell playing Abzan Company, I’ve always had a soft spot for Magic’s most polarizing format. I’m not sure what it is that I love the most – the absurdly powerful decks that can kill you as soon as turn 3, the endless decks for players to choose from, or the innovative lists that come out of nowhere to take down a tournament – but everything about Modern just lines up with what I love about Magic.

So what’s better than one Modern Grand Prix, you ask? Two, of course. For the first time ever, StarCityGames.com and Channel Fireball will be hosting a Modern Grand Prix on the same weekend! And what have we dubbed this extravaganza, you ask?

Modern Weekend May 20-22!

Now, unless you’ve got some superpowers that I and S.H.I.E.L.D. aren’t aware of, you can’t be in two places at once. Therefore you’ll have to choose the one most convenient for you. Don’t Call It a Comeback!

Not interested in the Modern main event, eh? Completely understandable, as Modern can be a pretty crazy format sometimes. Fortunately, we’ve got plenty of other things for you to do. Our Infinite Challenge packages continue to be a huge hit, so we’ve brought those back for #GPCharlotte in both three-day and one-day varieties. I’ll have more on this option later this week, but if you can’t wait that long, you can learn more about our challenge schedule here.

Speaking of things we’re bringing back, the last time StarCityGames.com hosted a Grand Prix in Charlotte, Noble Hierarch was everywhere! I’m talking sleeves, deckboxes, playmats, and even pins! If you missed out on your opportunity to get some Noble Hierarch swag last time, we’re giving you one last shot at redemption, as obtaining Noble Hierarch swag is part of our Premium rewards package! I’ll be going over all that entails later this week as well, but if you lack the patience of the Black Panther, you can learn more here.

What’s Jace Up To?

What would a Magic tournament be without ole Jace? The most iconic planeswalker of all time will be in Charlotte to take care of all your playmat needs, as you can watch him pore over the pages like Captain America reluctantly reading over the Sokovia Accords.

Our Guest of Honor

One of the best parts of any Magic tournament? Special guests! Now we’ve got quite a few amazing guests lined up for Grand Prix Charlotte, but when Rob Alexander is a part of the fun, you know something special is going down. Rob is one of the original 25 artists of Magic, has illustrated hundreds of cards for the game we know and love, and his unique style has won him fans all over the globe. From Badlands to Polluted Delta and Breeding Pool to Shivan Reef, Rob Alexander is one-of-a-kind when it comes to Magic artwork and it is our pleasure to say that he is the guest of honor for Grand Prix Charlotte.

What Tomorrow Brings

Grand Prix Charlotte is going to be an amazing event, so one little overview from yours truly simply isn’t going to be enough. Tomorrow I’ll be going over each of the registration options, the rewards that go along with them, and making sure that you know which one is the best option for you. And maybe even more Captain America: Civil War puns! See ya then!
