Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC), take a look at this powerful Turtle Shaman from Commander Legends — Archelos, Lagoon Mystic!
As long as Archelos, Lagoon Mystic is tapped, other permanents enter the battlefield tapped.
Is the pace of your game too quick? Just tap Archelos and everything slows way down. Comparable cards, such as Blind Obedience or Authority of the Consuls, only affect certain types of permanents, making their reach limited, while Archelos affects all other permanents.
While this first ability is strong, and slowing the pace of the game can be important, sometimes you’ve got to go fast, and Archelos’ second ability does just that.
As long as Archelos, Lagoon Mystic is untapped, other permanents enter the battlefield untapped.
While untapped, Archelos acts as an Amulet of Vigor variant, allowing you (and each opponent) to take advantage of powerful permanents that would normally otherwise enter the battlefield tapped. Cards like Time Vault, Lotus Field, bounce lands, and many more all benefit greatly from this ability.
While it may be tempting to simply cast Archelos and let him do his thing, playing him optimally will provide fun challenges, like evaluating when to leave Archelos tapped versus untapped to gain the most value while punishing the other players. This will likely lead to unique deckbuilding choices and lots of complex and exciting turns.
So what do you think of Archelos, Lagoon Mystic? Will he be your next commander or get slotted into another of your decks? Let us know in the comments below!
