Echoverse Meets Multiverse
“Unafraid” starts with the initial stage of the Echoverse overlaying the Multiverse. After brief glimpses of several planes, the action returns to Strixhaven-Hexhaven, where Tam experiences the panic among Strixhaven’s students. She finds Kirol, a friend she betrayed on Jace’s orders, who expresses resentment but also a bond.
Kirol tells Tam to use her intelligence and figure out a solution to the overlay. Confronting the problem, she feels incomplete and inadequate, and gets swept away by the many students running in terror.
Duels of the Doubles
In the last of Jace’s memory rooms, modeled on the Implicit Maze of Ravnica, Vraska reunites with Chandra, who warns that their doubles are guarding the one path out. The Echo-Vraska controls a massive dragon statue, but Vraska comes up with a plan to petrify Echo-Vraska with a lift from Chandra.
With help from the Jace aspects inside Vraska’s head, the launch is a success, and Vraska lands to confront Echo-Vraska. Vraska successfully petrifies her echo, and her friends Ajani, Chandra, and Garruk defeat their doubles by switching targets. Vraska puts on Echo-Vraska’s dress, and the four planeswalkers advance to the Theorist’s sanctum.
Theorist, Ex
The Theorist, though losing even more of himself, continues to push the overlay forward. Liliana interrupts, though the Theorist resists her, remembering her betrayal during the War of the Spark and her manipulations during their relationship.
As Vraska arrives at the Theorist’s side, Liliana sends the lich-Professor Opal to attack the Theorist. Liliana demands that the Theorist undo the overlay, but the Theorist insists he cannot. After another attack, the Theorist lashes back with Liliana’s darkest memories and prepares to kill her, only for Vraska to intervene…
…the real Vraska, that is, who intervenes by stabbing the Theorist through the heart. He tries to pull out the knife, but his aberrations return to him, stopping his manipulation of the overlay and disabling him. The Soldier makes the Theorist forget how to breathe, and then the parts of Jace resolve into one being, singular, complete, and dying.
Jace sends last telepathic messages to the planeswalker friends and lovers around him, even finding closure with Liliana. Vraska offers to go somewhere else with Jace, but he chooses reality to die in. His last words are to her: “Thank you, Captain.”
The Apocalypse Continues
As Vraska and Liliana mourn the man both loved in their own ways, Ajani reminds the planeswalkers that the overlay is still in progress and must be stopped. Then a blue ball of light rises out of Jace’s corpse and accelerates out a window, leaving Liliana to yell after it.

An Echoverse as Dinner
On Strixhaven-Hexhaven, Tam sees the blue ball of light hurtling toward her. She tries to deflect it, dodge, run, but it strikes her, overwhelming her with magic. After she recovers, she remembers that she is supposed to ask for help, and she reaches out to a being she met on Innistrad: the Eldrazi Emrakul.
Tam invites Emrakul to consume the Echoverse, and Emrakul accepts. As Tam returns to her body, she feels more like a person, complete with her own wants and desires. Tam sees Emrakul devour the Echoverse on Hexhaven and reaches out with her mind to experience the same phenomenon on other planes.
At the Folioplex, Tam meets the Strixhaven friends she betrayed. Abigale and Sanar embrace her. Lluwen stays away. Kirol also refuses a hug, but demands an introduction. Tam introduces herself as just Tam, just herself. She then tells her friends how to get home safely before leaving to ensure the safety of other Strixhaven students.
Old Foes
In the late Theorist’s sanctum, the planeswalker copies return to torment their originals. Garruk also takes the moment to try to settle an old score with Liliana. Liliana offers her life to Garruk’s revenge as Ajani and Chandra evacuate. Garruk asks Liliana about Will and Rowan Kenrith, then planeswalks away.
Liliana sees Vraska still holding Jace’s body. She thinks about leaving them, but instead tells Vraska not to let herself perish. Together, they carry the dead Jace back to Multiversal reality.
Meanwhile, Tam experiences the consumption of Hexhaven firsthand. She thanks Emrakul, then hears a last psychic message from Jace. He had made Tam as a “fail-safe”, she has inherited his spark, and he asks her to make things better in the Multiverse. Knowing herself at last, Tam wishes herself a happy birthday and planeswalks for the first time, back to the safety of Strixhaven.
Mother, Widow, Children
Some time later, on Jace’s home plane of Vryn, Vraska stays with Jace’s mother Ranna and her adopted child Loot. Jace’s funeral was modest, his body sunk in a lake. One morning, Vraska opens the door to find Tam as a visitor, looking eerily like both Jace and Vraska herself.
Vraska is unsure how to respond to Tam, who says she is in mourning like Vraska and wants Vraska’s help once she is ready. Ranna drops teacups in astonishment on seeing Tam, who tells Vraska, plainly and without fear, that she has come “to help make things better.”
