Pixelborn, the popular digital simulator for the Disney Lorcana trading card game, has announced it is shutting down.
Pavel Kolev, the Lead Developer for Pixelborn, broke the news to the thousands of dedicated users via the client’s Discord server yesterday. In his message, Kolev states that he had been contacted by Disney representatives and was advised that “Disney has intellectual property rights in the Disney Lorcana cards and that Disney has requested Pixelborn to respect these rights by not copying the cards or in any way suggesting an affiliation with Disney.“
Despite being non-profit, Kolev knew that there was always a chance that Disney would eventually claim their property, but in the year and a half that Pixelborn operated, it became the go-to platform for players test decks and hone their skills. It also served as the most convenient resource for making Disney Lorcana content, as tabletop gameplay content is much more difficult to produce.
Pixelborn is slated to go offline beginning June 16, 2024. At this time, neither Disney nor Ravensburger have announced an official digital client for Lorcana, but the future does seem bright based on off-hand comments from Ravensburger’s Ryan Miller: “It’s like Bruno. I can’t talk about it.”
