Following the bans of Karn, the Great Creator and Geological Appraiser and the unbanning of Smuggler’s Copter, more than 1,300 players flocked to Atlanta this past weekend to play Pioneer in hopes of securing an invite to the Pro Tour or even the World Championship. The format saw rise to a new combo deck in the form of Amalia Company, but old standbys like Azorius Control, Izzet Phoenix, and Rakdos Midrange still played a major part.
Weiser went 11-1-2 through 14 rounds of Swiss to enter the elimination rounds as the No. 5 seed. Weiser took down Robert Wagner-Krankel on Amalia Company in the quarterfinals in a four-game set, where one of the games was a draw due to how loops work with Amalia Benavides Aguirre and Wildgrowth Walker where infinite explore triggers go on the stack. From there, Weiser defeated Izzet Phoenix players in Robert King and Mark Stanton in the semifinals and finals, respectively.
Weiser and Stanton punched their tickets to the next Magic: The Gathering World Championship for reaching the finals of the Regional Championship. Weiser walked away with $30,000 and the trophy while Stanton took home $15,000 for second place. The Top 8 as well as the rest of the Top 32 finishers also earned an invite to the next Pro Tour.
The Top 8 decks all came from the four most-played decks in the field.
