Hello everyone, and welcome back to my daily series of Financial Value articles about the newest set. This time around, we’re going to discuss the third set of the immensely popular Return to Ravnica block: Dragon’s Maze! Since the formatting for this article is slightly different than past Financial Value articles, you’re going to have to look at this guide to my article every…single…day! Today’s update is light on the new cards, so I’ll also be taking stock of the best sellers so far!
Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder
Current Price: The current price of the card, by the time this article goes live
Future Price—Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Dragon’s Maze
Future Price—Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (M14) comes out
Future Price—Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now, when the next spring set is released (Journey to Nyx)
Blood Baron of Vizkopa | |
Starting Price: $10 Current Price: $10 Future Price—Short Term: $6 Future Price—Medium Term: $10 Future Price—Long Term: $15 |
There’s a precedent for this card: Divinity of Pride. Divinity of Pride is easier to cast in a mono-colored deck, but Blood Baron is easier to cast in general. Both are 4/4 lifelink creatures for five mana that get a huge bonus at a certain life threshold; Divinity of Pride has flying (evasion), and Blood Baron has protection from white and black (limited evasion). I see enough similarities between the two that I draw a straight comparison—Blood Baron will see a lot of casual play, will drop in value in the short term, and will be a highly sought after casual staple a year from now.
Deadbridge Chant | |
Starting Price: $8 Current Price: $8 Future Price—Short Term: $5 Future Price—Medium Term: $4 Future Price—Long Term: $4 |
I’m not a huge fan of a draw/Reanimator engine that costs six mana, doesn’t do anything until the turn after it comes into play, and is random. EBay is starting these at $10-$12, but I think it’s going to drop quickly, so I’m starting ours at $8 to undercut the market and sell as many in the short term. If Epic Experiment wasn’t broken, I don’t think this card will be either.
Legion’s Initiative | |
Starting Price: $10 Current Price: $10 Future Price—Short Term: $5 Future Price—Medium Term: $5 Future Price—Long Term: $5 |
If you’re looking for an anti-Wrath effect, isn’t Boros Charm a better choice at the same mana cost? I’m not a huge fan of conditional Crusade effects, though at two mana this one is more palatable than most. While there’s a lot of hype about this card, I think it’s just not going to pan out in the long term.
