Financial Value Of Dragon’s Maze Wrap-Up

Throughout the past three weeks, I gave updates on Dragon’s Maze as each new day of rares/mythics were spoiled. For today’s article, I’m going to give some overall thoughts about Dragon’s Maze as a set. I’m going to include some adjustments in predictions based on where cards have gone over the past three weeks, and I’m going to talk the long-term value of Dragon’s Maze.

Overall Thoughts

  • Taken on its own, Dragon’s Maze is a better set than Gatecrash but worse than Return to Ravnica.
  • In my cheat sheet (right-click and Save to download), I have four price categories: Current Price, Price One Month From Now, Price By The Time Theros Is Released (first week of October), and Price A Year From Now. Cards that I see going up in value from their current price have yellow highlights!

Of the 35 Rares in Dragon’s Maze

 1 Month Out: 9 gain value, 6 maintain value (all $0.50 bulk rares), 20 lose value—of the ones that gain value, the majority of them are going to be heavily sought after Standard staples.

Theros Release:  5 gain value, 8 maintain value, and 22 lose value from where they are now. The big gainer I see between now and Theros is Sire of Insanity, a card I originally rated as a bulk rare. I’m not too proud to say I was wrong and that I’ve been convinced of how good Sire is based on playtest results that are out there.

1 Year Out: 9 gain value, 8 maintain value, and 18 lose value from where they are now. The big long-term winner is Beck // Call, which will be heavily sought after once we hit Modern season next year.

  • Of the 11 mythics in Dragon’s Maze—every single one of them loses value in the short term except for Voice of Resurgence; I feel Voice will be the Geist of Saint Traft / Falkenrath Aristocrat for green/white in this set and will raise in value. The other mythics will all drop. Blood Baron (casual play) and Ral Zarek (potential Modern play) are the two that will most maintain high value; Progenitor Mimic and Savage Hydra will have a lot of casual interest for years to come.
  • Note that some of my valuations have changed since I started writing daily three weeks ago. There has been playtesting (with proxies) and a lot of opinions out there about cards, and the new values reflect a combination of my initial predictions and where the market is currently headed.
  • Also keep in mind that there are shocklands in this set, and shocklands are still trading at $7-$12 each! This adds tremendously to the value of a Dragon’s Maze box (2-4 Shocks a box) and is a facet of this set that has been all but ignored due to the hype of new cards. Long term, this is going to be an amazing set to hold on to from a sealed perspective because it has the best ten rares from this block in addition to a number of money cards.
