Blake Rasmussen and Corey Bowen previewed three new cards from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt on Weekly MTG including the final Commander card available only in Set and Collector Boosters.
First up is a new black mythic rare — Jerren, Corrupted Bishop!
Jerren is a legendary Human Cleric that happens to transform into a famous demon from the plane — Ormendahl, the Corrupter. Jerren and Ormendahl receive the special eternal night showcase treatment.
For three mana and the price of one life, you get a 2/3 and 1/1. From then on, whenever a nontoken Human you control dies, lose another life and get another 1/1 Human token. But Jerren also gives you the ability to give a Human lifelink for two mana, allowing you to recoup the life lost to generate the tokens. The lifelink ability can also help you thread the needle and reach the end step at thirteen life to transform Jerren into Ormendahl.
While this version of Ormendahl might not size up to the Profane Prince from Shadows Over Innistrad, a 6/6 flying, trampling, lifelinker is still incredibly powerful. On top of those stats, you can sacrifice a creature to draw a card — and that creature can be a token that Jerren created!
Next up is Malevolent Hermit!
This Human Wizard can play for either Humans or Spirits decks, as its disturb half transforms its creature type.
A two-mana 2/1 can provide pressure while its sacrifice ability can help protect your battlefield from mass removal or a specific creature from a targeted removal spell. And once Malevolent Hermit dies, you can bring it back for more utility.
Now your noncreature spells can’t be countered, so let your copies of Collected Company, pump spells, or removal rip without the fear of interaction.
Lastly, check out Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor!
Lynde is a Commander card that shows up in Set and Collector Boosters. Dive into this 2/4 Human Warlock with deathtouch designed specially to appeal to players that enjoy cursing opponents and even themselves.
As a Grixis-colored legendary creature, Lynde can’t fit into one of the two Commander decks for the set, so she has to appear in the boosters instead. But Lynde feels right at home in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, as it’s the main plane that provides curses.
Lynde lets you rebuy curses when they go to a graveyard by cursing her controller and then distributing them back to opponents later on. And when you attach a curse to an opponent that was attached to you for two more cards.
What do you think of the new cards? Are you more excited for the return of Ormendahl or the new curse-themed Lynde for Commander?
Innistrad: Midnight Hunt is currently scheduled for release on September 24. View our official preview gallery.
