On today’s Good Morning Magic, Gavin Verhey shared five card connections spanning from the original Innistrad through Midnight Hunt.
Magic has a rich history of tying cards together through art and flavor text, even across multiple sets. Verhey’s first connection is a pair of commons, one from Innistrad and the other from Eldritch Moon.
Make a Wish
Both cards are illustrated by Howard Lyon and have the same focal point, however the hopeful little girl in Make a Wish has been replaced by an Eldrazi Horror in Grapple with the Past. The Eldrazi is also fishing out the teddy bear that the little girl was holding in the other art. Unfortunately, we may never know the true fate of the girl — whether she fell into the well, or became a Horror herself.
Endless Ranks of the Dead
The second connection is between Endless Ranks of the Dead from Innistrad, and Relentless Dead from Shadows Over Innistrad.
In the first card, we see a horde of the undead gathering outside a stained-glass window, building their ranks to overwhelm the living inside the church. In Relentless Dead, we see the same perspective, however the window has been smashed and the horde has begun its invasion.
Delver of Secrets
Not only is Delver of Secrets one of Magic’s most format defining cards, but it is also part of a three-part connection chain that begins in Innistrad, is continued in Shadows Over Innistrad, and concludes in Eldritch Moon.
This chain of cards is pretty straight forward, telling the story of a scientist so dedicated to perfecting their work that even being transformed into a progressively more horrible creature couldn’t stop them.
Village Cannibals
Village Cannibals is one of Innistrad’s most horrifically flavorful cards, but did you figure out its connection with Village Rites from Core Set 2021? Evidently, what goes around comes around on Innistrad, as the cannibalistic villagers have begun to turn on their own.
Champion of the Parish
The final connection links together Champion of the Parish, an iconic rare from original Innistrad, with one of the most anticipated rares from the upcoming set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt — Champion of the Perished.
So what do you think of these connections? Will we see more as preview season for Midnight Hunt unfolds? Let us know which cards you think could have future connections in the comments!
Innistrad: Midnight Hunt is currently scheduled for release on September 24. View our official preview gallery.
