Preview season for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty has officially begun, and courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC), you can check out a ton of new cards below!
Planeswalkers
The Wandering Emperor
Our first planeswalker with flash, The Wandering Emperor allows you to activate her abilities any time you could cast an instant on the turn she entered the battlefield.
[+1]: Put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature. It gains first strike until end of turn.
[-1]: Create a 2/2 white Samurai creature token with vigilance.
[-2]: Exile target tapped creature. You gain 2 life.
Starting with three loyalty for four mana, The Wandering Emperor forgoes a strong, ultimate ability in favor of immediate interaction with the battlefield. Thanks to flash, she becomes a strong combat trick — able to buff your creatures, create blockers, and exile tapped creatures.
Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh
A familiar face appears! Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh starts with four loyalty for four mana and provides a nice discount for your first activated ability of an artifact each turn.
[+1]: Draw two cards. Then discard two cards unless you discard an artifact card.
[-2]: Target artifact becomes and artifact creature. If it isn’t a Vehicle, it has base power and toughness 4/4.
[-6]: You get an emblem with “Whenever an artifact you control becomes tapped, draw a card.”
In traditional Tezzeret fashion, his abilities cater to card draw and artifact animation. His [+1} ability is a great source of card advantage, while the [-2] allows you to turn your non-Vehicle artifacts into 4/4s. Tezzeret’s ultimate ability isn’t game ending on the spot, but rather continues the route of burying your opponents under card advantage.
Tamiyo, Compleated Sage
Poor Tamiyo has been given a Phyrexian makeover.
Compleated
[+1]: Tap up to one target artifact or creature. It doesn’t untap during its controller’s next untap step.
[-X]: Exile target nonland permanent card with mana value X from your graveyard. Create a token that’s a copy of that card.
[-7] Create Tamiyo’s Notebook, a legendary colorless artifact token with “Spells you cast cost 2 less to cast” and “T: Draw a card.”
Tamiyo, Compleated Sage can be cast for either five mana, or four mana and two life, thanks to the compleated mechanic. Starting with five loyalty (or three, if cast with compleated) Tamiyo can play defensively with her {+1}, control the battlefield by generating copies of nonland permanents from your graveyard with her {-X}, and finally, get massive value from discounted cards using her minus seven ultimate ability.
Sagas
The sagas in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty are double-faced cards (DFC), starting out as enchantments and then transforming into enchantment creatures upon completion of the saga.
Legendary Creatures
Jin-Gitaxias, an ominous Phyrexian Praetor, copies your artifact, instant, and sorcery spells while also negating those cast by your opponents.
If you’ve been keeping up with the leaks over the past few weeks, you may recognize these legendary Dragon Spirits.
Shrines
Shrines return with familiar mechanics but with all new looks!
So what do you think of these cards? Will any of them reshape the current state of constructed Magic? Let us know what you think in the comments.
