Rosewater: Companions Can Be Banned In Vintage

Companions are the talk of the town and Mark Rosewater has weighed in on what these cards mean for Vintage.

Since the digital release of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, almost every format has been dominated by companions. Naturally, following the flood of strong tournament results, Magic fans have taken to social media to discuss the power level of companions and if they deserve to be included in Banned & Restricted talks.

Continuing this discussion, Tumblr user pigmywurm asked Magic: The Gathering Head Designer, Mark Rosewater, on his Blogatog, what the protocol would be should a companion be too powerful even for Vintage — a format that is defined by powerful cards and normally only restricts cards to one copy, rather than being outright banned.

While a relief to know Wizards of the Coast (WotC) could take the steps to ban a (very) problematic card in Vintage, it is notable that a mechanic less than two weeks old is already being brought up in the same discussion as bannings in Eternal formats.
