Rosewater covered many of the concepts and identities of the Lorehold college in his Making Magic column, including showing off this rare Lesson.
Discard any number of cards, then draw that many cards. Then if there are seven or more cards in your graveyard, create a 3/2 red and white Spirit creature token.
Situational looting style spells have been helpful for red midrange decks, but there’s a lot of competition for card advantage and card filtering in those types of decks. Pure card filtering spells aren’t usually enough to cut it, so they need a little help. Whether that help comes as a modal DFC like Valakut Awakening or the spell having flashback to use again like Faithless Looting, these types of cards become playable with the slightest boost. Well, Illuminate History provides that thanks to its Lesson spell type, allowing you to find it with a card with Learn.
You don’t have to risk having Illuminate History be a bad draw, because it can live in the sideboard until you need a way to refuel or get rid of extra lands. On top of that bonus, Illuminate History can also give you a 3/2 creature token for your troubles as long as you have seven or more cards in your graveyard. The token represents the Lorehold mascot, and is the first of the five college mascot tokens we get to see.
