New Format Officially Launches on MTG Arena

With today’s update, Historic receives Ranked Best-of-Three queues, which player’s will also be able to enjoy until the end of January, and a 20 card increase to the existing card pool.

After almost five months since the initial announcement, Magic’s Historic format is finally live on MTG Arena.

Historic is the first format designed specifically for MTG Arena and includes cards from 2017’s Ixalan up to Magic’s most current set, Throne of Eldraine.

With today’s update, Historic receives Ranked Best-of-Three queues, which player’s will also be able to enjoy until the end of January, and a 20 card increase to the existing card pool.

When selecting the cards to be added, developers wanted to find cards that could “drive decks that wouldn’t otherwise exist in the format”, opting for cards that had “performed well in past Standard formats, or even showed up in Modern and beyond.”

Despite being somewhat eclipsed by the popularity of Pioneer, Wizards still intends to “make Historic a competitive format that pairs with Standard” and will introduce “competitive, evergreen Historic events starting in January”.

Additionally, to help keep things fresh, new card drops are planned for every quarter. Similar to the 20 cards listed above, the quarterly card drops will be hand-picked by developers to best fit in with the current meta.
