Wizards of the Coast (WotC) released their MTG Arena State of the Game for March today, bringing some interesting changes and new events.
Historic Anthology II
The goal with Historic Anthology II is to “…open up the options for Historic decks to start bringing the greater breadth that a nonrotating format should support” and includes options that “help more unusual decks [and] bring on a nostalgic smile.”
Below are all 25 cards being added to Historic in MTG Arena.
Historic Event Schedule
Below is the schedule for upcoming Historic events.
- Historic Ranked: March 12–April 16
- Historic Traditional Ranked: March 12–April 16
- Workshop—Heirlooms of History: March 15–March 18
- Erebos’s Memoir of Death (Historic Brawl): March 21–March 23
- Historic Pauper: March 28–April 4
- Historic Challenge: April 11–April 13
Direct Messaging
With the March update, users will be able to direct message in-game friends.
The chat feature will function during matches and only works with users currently on the friends list, meaning you cannot communicate directly with your opponent unless they are already on your friends list.
Additionally, challenging users on your friends list will contribute toward completing Daily and Weekly quests.
Color Challenges
For newer players, Color Challenges are a fun, new way to learn the basics of Magic. Below is a brief overview of what the challenges include.
- Account Mastery has been removed; players now earn new player rewards (additional decks, Wildcards, etc.) by completing Color Challenges.
- There are five Color Challenges (one for each color of Magic), and each Challenge contains five challenges.
- Existing players can access and play the Color Challenges through the “Learn More” page.
- Post-game tips that highlight the spells and combat tricks available to the player
Cube Sealed
While many MTG Arena users wanted Cube Draft, WotC has stated that they “…don’t believe it would be a fun environment for drafting with bots”, and plan to start with Sealed.
Cube Sealed will be arriving on MTG Arena in early April and will be built from the cards “…currently available in MTG Arena, including Historic Anthology II.” These events will be similar to Phantom Events on Magic Online, meaning the cards opened will not be added to the user’s collection upon event completion.
The updates above are currently scheduled to be added on Thursday, March 12.
