Mordenkainen Shows Up As Blue Planeswalker In Adventures In The Forgotten Realms

Iconic D&D character comes to Magic in planeswalker form.

Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Polygon, check out a new blue planeswalker from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms — Mordenkainen!

Mordenkainen is one of the most famous characters in all of Dungeons & Dragons and is now in Magic as a planeswalker. This six-mana blue planeswalker follows the blueprint of ticking up for card advantage, ticking down for a way to defend itself, and an ultimate that should set you up to win the game.

+2: Draw two cards, then put a card from your hand on the bottom of your library.

Mordenkainen goes up to seven loyalty after one +2 which gives you two new cards for exchange of putting one card from your hand on the bottom of your library. Similar to using Brainstorm and putting back unneeded cards and shuffling, Mordenkainen takes care of clearing away the unneeded card for you.

-2: Create a blue Dog Illusion creature token with “This creature’s power and toughness are each equal to twice the number of cards in your hand.”

The -2 ability provides decent sized creatures as long as you’re doing the usual blue thing and keeping some cards in your hand. At five starting loyalty, Mordenkainen can make two Dog Illusions before needing to tick up again.

-10: Exchange your hand and library, then shuffle. You get an emblem with “You have no maximum hand size.”

And for the finale you get to swap your hand and library for massive card advantage that should help you find a way to win the game. If you have any Dog Illusions, they should be large enough now to one-shot an opponent.

What do you think of Mordenkainen? Cab this iconic D&D character make an impact in Standard?
