Ikoria Oracle Changes Jumps The Shark

After waiting since The Dark to get their own creature type, Ikoria finally introduces the Shark!

Sharks have long been depicted in Magic, dating back to Giant Shark from The Dark, but they have always had the creature type of Fish. Now with the Oracle update posted today by Eli Shiffrin, Sharks are an official creature type thanks to Voracious Greatshark from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths.

Along with the new rare Shark, previous Sharks described as Fish will now get the Shark treatment, updating cards like: Battering Krasis, Hammerhead Shark, Shambleshark, and Sharktocrab.

The other Oracle update that could impact a relatively important card is the addition of the Dryad creature type to Dryad of the Ilysian Grove. It will now be a Nymph Dryad which may alter the naming of a creature type with Cavern of Souls.

From there, raid got a slight wording rework, simplifying the phrase “if you attacked with a creature this turn” to “if you attacked this turn.” As the only way to attack in Magic is with creatures, the text on future cards with raid can be slimmed down to match the new oracle text.

Other updates include:

  • Changing the creature type of Chicken a la King from Unglued from Chicken to Bird
  • Clarifying the oracle text for Stand or Fall
  • Clearing up the wording from Garruk’s Horde from “You may cast the top card of your library if it’s a creature card” to “You may cast creature spells from the top of your library,”
  • A slight update to Mirror Image
  • Alters to cost-reducing cards like Heartstone
