Gavin Verhey explained why colorless sorceries return in Strixhaven: School of Mages on today’s episode of Good Morning Magic.

Verhey started the episode clarifying that despite some of the imagery in the set and the return of colorless sorceries, there will be no Eldrazi in Strixhaven. From there, Verhey said the main reason colorless sorceries are back are for the Learn and Lesson mechanics, making sure that no matter what color deck someone plays they would have access to baseline Lessons.

A key part of making the colorless Lessons was to be very careful as previous “colorless” spells like the Phyrexian Mana spells were way too powerful and showed up in too many decks because of how easy they were to cast.

Verhey said there are six colorless sorceries in the set, including the modal DFC of Wandering Archaic/Explore the Vastlands, so that there is one more we haven’t seen yet.

Verhey also said that while colorless spells are something not used very often, don’t expect this to be the last time they show up.
