Gavin Verhey brought on DeQuan Watson of The Color of Magic podcast to talk about Core Set 2021, while showing off new art for lesser-known characters that surround Teferi in the Magic story.
The pair talk about the history of Teferi from his beginnings in the Tolarain Academy to protecting Zhalfir to his shift in the game from being a new character to becoming a villain due to his powerful planeswalker cards. After reviewing the freshly previewed Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse and Mangara, the Diplomat, Verhey and Watson shed some light and some new art on the other characters surrounding Teferi in the lore.
Two of the characters are Kaervek and Niambi, both who we have rarely seen on cards. Kaervek the Merciless showed up in Time Spiral and Niambi, Faithful Healer made an appearance in Dominaria. Verhey confirmed both are getting new cards in Core Set 2021 and GMM teased viewers with their art.
We know very little of Niambi other than she is Teferi’s daughter from a Magic Story article from 2018. The story also mentions Subira, who is Niambi’s mother and Teferi’s love interest, but up to this point hasn’t appeared on a card. That will change with Core Set 2021 as Subira gets her first card with art, also previewed in this episode.
Barrin, Master Wizard had his own card in Urza’s Saga, but the professor at the Tolarian Academy will get a new one in Core Set 2021. Verhey and Watson showed off his new art as the last teaser.
