Glorious Anthem Makes Triumphant Return To Standard

The original anthem effect returns to Standard in Core Set 2021.

Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and CoolStuffInc.com, Core Set 2021 is reprinting a card dating back to Urza’s Saga — Glorious Anthem.

This non-color specific, one-sided buff debuted in 1998 and has been reprinted in many core sets, even getting color-shifted to green in Planar Chaos on Gaea’s Anthem. In fact, Glorious Anthem is the reason why similar cards are now referred to as anthems.

Creatures you control get +1/+1.

It doesn’t get much simpler than that. We’ve seen similar effects on many cards in Magic history, but Glorious Anthem refined it. It was last printed in 10th Edition, but had plenty of variations.

While Benalish Marshall isn’t in Standard anymore, it was the closest we had to an anthem in the format for some time. Sanctuary Lockdown does a close impersonation for Humans and Fortifying Provisions from Throne of Eldraine buffs toughness for your creatures. Now we’ll get to see what aggressive white decks can do with a classic archetype staple.
