Earlier this week, the Lorcana Twitter account shared a post asking fans to “guess the glimmer” based on a snippet of artwork (seen below).
After several days of sleuthing, the general consensus in the community was that the glimmer was likely Maleficent in her dragon form, however Maleficent is one of the few characters to have a Lorcana card already revealed. So what could this mean? An all-new card!
Dragonfire is not only the first new card revealed since the initial seven at the D23 Expo back in September, but is also the first non-character card to be shown. Since this is the first “Action” card we’ve seen, any information derived is purely speculative, but it’s likely that actions are similar to instant and sorcery spells from Magic: The Gathering – once played, an effect happens and then they immediately go to a discard pile or graveyard equivalent.
In this case, it seems that Dragonfire is a form of spot removal – banishing a chosen character – simple and clean.
We’ve seen the “Banish” keyword previously, on the Maleficent character card, and combined with the text seen on Cruella De Vil, it seems likely that banish is Lorcana’s equivalent of “destroy” in Magic, and that the challenge mechanic initiates a form of “combat”.
Everything we know about Lorcana’s gameplay is speculative, and should be treated as such until developer Ravensburger’s official reveal, currently slated for Spring of 2023.
