The Commander Rules Committee posted an update today discussing allowing companion and the bannings of Lutri, the Spellchaser and Flash.
The update begins with the rational behind allowing companion in Commander. While companion does violate the 100-card rule, it leads toward creativity and brewing with restrictions, something the committee encourages. An update to rule 11 also differentiates companion from cards like wishes and Karn, the Great Creator that pull cards from “outside the game.”
The update then touches on Lutri, the Spellchaser giving more detail to why the committee approved the premature banning.
The update reiterates the reasoning behind the banning, citing not wanting players to acquire a card that would most certainly get banned within months. While this type of banning is a one-time thing, the article mentions that as Wizards of the Coast (WotC) explores new types of designs, this situation could come up again.
Lastly, the decision was finally made to ban Flash. A contested card and ruling, the committee decided the move had to be made to help restore the cEDH community. It recognizes the banning is being made to satisfy a small player base, but it was still necessary to make.
