Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Mashable, check out some amphibian-themed rares from Commander Legends — Gor Muldrak, Amphinologist and Amphin Mutineer!
Gor Muldrak is a new Simic legendary creature with a unique ability made for multiplayer games. It also references the creature type Salamander, which has only been used on creatures ten times before in Magic history.
You and permanents you control have protection from Salamanders.
Not only is “protection from” seldom used these days in Magic design, but protection from a rarely used creature type makes this a headscratcher. The most notable Salamander in Magic history has been Pteramander from Ravnica Allegiance, seeing legitimate Standard play and winning a Mythic Championship in the hands of Autumn Burchett. The first ability makes more sense when you get to the second line of text.
At the beginning of your end step, each player who controls the fewest creatures creates a 4/3 blue Salamander Warrior creature token.
A quasi “group hug” ability lends itself to play in Commander, where someone can share with other players. Of course, Gor Muldrak keeps you safe from all the Salamanders you generate for the other players and happens to block them very well. Simic often plays into odd creature types and making tokens, so Gor Muldrak looks to fit perfectly into its spot in Commander Legends.
As an Amphinologist, it only makes sense that an Amphin to study is introduced as well. Meet Amphin Mutineer!
This Salamander Pirate is the first creature type of its kind and brings along the encore mechanic. It’s enters the battlefield trigger falls in line with spells like Pongify and Rapid Hybridization.
When Amphin Mutineer enters the battlefield, exile up to one target non-Salamander creature. That creature’s controller creates a 4/3 blue Salamander Warrior creature token.
Blue usually has to find creative ways to get rid of creatures and Amphin Mutineer lives up to that by being able to exile any non-Salamander in exchange for a 4/3. It plays well with Gor Muldrak by taking care of a problematic creature and exchanging it for something the Amphinologist has protection from. It also has encore for 4UU to be able to come back a final time to give multiple opponents Salamander tokens.
What do you think of the new wave of Salamander-matters cards in Commander Legends? Will they make your Simic decks or create new ones looking to leverage Gor Muldrak to the fullest?
