Commander Legends Gives Jund A Unique Mana Burn Commander

Mana burn is back, but this time in the form of a creature!

Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Numerama, take a look at this unique Viashino Shaman from Commander Legends — Yurlock of the Burn-Thrash!

Vigilance

Whenever a player loses unspent mana, they lose that much life.

Mana burn is back, but thankfully, it’s attached to a card this time. Taxing each player for their unspent mana can rack up the damage very fast, especially in a format like Commander where players tend to accumulate a great deal of resources quickly and just love casting big spells in general. While this first ability is already quite strong, it’s the second ability that makes Yurlok wildly powerful.

1, T: Each player adds BRG.

For the low cost of only one mana, Yurlok divvies out three mana of Jund colors to each player, meaning if your opponents are tapped out, that three mana is likely to go unspent. See where we’re going with this?

Yurlok’s unique mana generation ability is not only strong, but also an easy build around card that enables some silly combos, like generating infinite mana (and technically damage) when paired with cards like Thousand-Year Elixir or Magewright’s Stone.

Also previewed alongside Yurlok, is an equally unique artifact — Horizon Stone!

If you would lose unspent mana, that mana becomes colorless instead.

Not only does Horizon Stone synergize well with Yurlok, as you can use it to bank your unspent mana, but it also works with cards that conditionally add mana to your pool, such as Jaya Ballard, Irencrag Feat, and Leyline Tyrant.

Lastly, Numerama’s previews included two common reprints — Phyrexian Rager and Valakut Invoker.

Overall, Yurlok seems like a wildly fun Commander to build around and Horizon Stone is great inclusion in big-mana decks. So what do you think of these cards? Let us know in the comments below!
