Courtesy of Wizards of the Coast (WotC), take a look at the latest blue mythic rare creature to copy spells from Zendikar Rising — Sea Gate Stormcaller!
The blue Human Wizards helps fill out your party while allowing you to get a party started on the stack as well. A 2/1 for two with a five-mana kicker cost looks unimpressive at first, but the second ability gives Sea Gate Stormcaller plenty of flexibility.
When Sea Gate Stormcaller enters the battlefield, copy the next instant or sorcery spell with converted mana cost 2 or less you cast this turn when you cast it. If Sea Gate Stormcaller was kicked, copy that spell twice instead. You may choose new targets for the copies.
Even without the kicker, Sea Gate Stormcaller generates pretty good value. With cards like Bloodchief’s Thirst, Opt, Shock, Sea the Truth,. Agonizing Remorse, Duress, Eliminate, Heartless Act, Scorching Dragonfire, Thrill of Possibility, and Flame Prophecy Standard legal after rotation, there are plenty of options to get extra removal, discard, or card drawing. If you reach the late-game and have enough mana for the kicker, eight or nine mana can get you the creature and three copies of any of the spells.
Of course, most of Zendikar Rising hasn’t been previewed yet so there could be more toys waiting to paired with Sea Gate Stormcaller. Can this creature live up to the hype and immediate comparisons to Snapcaster Mage and similar creatures? Only time will tell.
