This is a bit confusing, so let’s break it down. If you play Scourge of the Skyclave when both players are still at twenty life, its power and toughness will be equal to 20 minus 20 (0/0) so it will die immediately. But in the right shell, curving into this early allows for it to start as a 1/1 or 2/2 and only get stronger as the game goes on.
In the mid-to-late game, this card is likely to enter the battlefield with huge stats, whether you choose to pay the kicker cost or not. Plus, with the right battlefield, paying for kicker to half both players’ life totals can set up a surprise lethal.
