Wizards of the Coast (WotC) surprised the Magic: The Gathering community today, revealing reprints of several planeswalkers that will be returning to Standard in the upcoming set, Magic Foundations.
Vivien, Liliana, and Ajani are the first planeswalkers to be revealed for Magic Foundations, a set designed to reshape the future of Standard by remaining legal in the format for five years, opposed to the normal three.
Early marketing for the set promoted art of both Liliana and Ajani, but Vivien is a welcome surprise. It also wasn’t known what version of the planeswalkers would be featured in the set until now, so it’s interesting to see these choices. While Ajani, Caller of the Pride (Magic 2013) and Vivien Reid (Core Set 2019) were both printed in Magic’s Core Sets, Liliana, Dreadhorde General (War of the Spark) was printed in a non-Core Set, which opens the door for all sorts of possible reprints for other planeswalkers in the set.
Preview season for Magic Foundations will officially begin on October 25 during MagicCon: Las Vegas, and you can follow each subsequent preview here.
Magic Foundations is scheduled to release on November 15, 2024.
