Wizards of the Coast (WotC) welcomed players back to campus today with the Secrets of Strixhaven Debut video and Weekly MTG stream, showing off mechanics, Booster Fun treatments, Commander face cards, previews for the main set and Mystical Archive bonus sheet, and much more.
Previews
Let’s kick off the previews with the cycle of Elder Dragons, school mascots, and dual lands for the set — the return of the “slow lands.”

Secrets of Strixhaven features two planeswalkers, a mono-black version of Ral Zarek and a new Golgari planeswalker, Professor Dellian Fell.

Mechanics
Prepared
Prepared shows up on creatures, which must be on the battlefield and prepared in order for you to cast a copy of the spell that appears on the right side of the text box. While these cards look like adventures or omens, you may not cast the spell part from your hand. Some creatures enter the battlefield prepared and others require you to meet a requirement to make the creature prepared. If the creature is prepared you may cast a copy of the spell, then the creature is no longer prepared. If you can manage to get the creature prepared again, you may cast the spell again.

Paradigm
Paradigm is a keyword that is an improved take of epic. When you cast one of the five spells in the set with paradigm (all of which are lessons) you exile it, then you may cast a copy of it for free at the beginning of each of your first main phases.

Repartee
Repartee is an ability word that highlights triggered abilities that trigger whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell targeting a creature.

Opus
Opus is an ability word that highlights triggered abilities that trigger whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell. When that instant or sorcery requires you to pay five or more mana for it, you get an even better effect.

Infusion
Infusion is an ability word that highlights abilities that care if you’ve gained life this turn.

Flashback
Flashback returns for Lorehold, giving cards the keyword ability which allows you to cast the card from your graveyard by paying its flashback cost.

Increment
Increment is a keyword that represents a triggered ability found on creatures. Whenever you cast a spell, if the amount of mana spent to cast that spell is greater than the power or toughness of the creature with increment, you put a +1/+1 counter on the creature.

Converge
Converge returns and rewards you for paying multiple colors of mana for cards. More colors of mana spent will generate stronger effects.

Secrets Of Strixhaven Commander
Check out the face cards for the five Commander Decks.

We also got a look at a prepared creature from the Commander set. Each color should get multiple eternal-legal creatures with the prepared ability.

Headliner
The serialized headliner for the set is a textless Emeritus of Ideation with art by Mark Poole, fitting as he was the artist behind the original artwork of Ancestral Recall.
