Oko And Kellan Bond With A Great Train Robbery In Episode 3 Of Outlaws Of Thunder Junction Story

Father and son rescue key piece for their mission as Kellan learns Oko isn’t always true to his word

Illustrated by Chris Seaman

Episode 3 of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction story picks up with Akul interrogating a mine overseer, who pleads for his life by telling the dragon that a shapeshifting fae with blue face paint was involved in the theft of an object from Bertram Graywater, founder of the Sterling Company. Once the overseer runs out of information and usefulness, Akul executes him and sends his Hellspurs looking for the mysterious fae.

The story then joins back up with Oko’s gang at the saloon, where Kellan is trying to make small talk with his father. Before much ground is covered, Kellan is surprised to see Ashiok and Eriette. He tells Oko that Ashiok is dangerous and attacked his home, but Oko instructs Kellan to trust him. Eriette is equally perturbed with Kellan’s presence, but Oko smooths things over and gets the meeting started.

Kaervek is directed to explain what kind of artifact the key they stole from Graywater is, but Kaervek knows little other than it doesn’t appear to be of Phyrexian or Than origins. He fears the key could unleash another Phyrexia on the Multiverse. On top of needing to know how the key works, the team also still doesn’t know where Tarnation, the city build around the vault of Maag Taranau, resides. Annie Flash mentions she knows an Outcaster from the territories who studies ancient magical artifacts named Nolan, but he is already on a train bound for Prosperity, escorted by Sterling mercenaries. The gang decides they need to get to Nolan before he arrives at Prosperity, so Oko has Kellan brief the group on what he knows of the Sterling group and its guard rotation.

The story cuts to Oko, Kellan, and Umezawa in disguise and somehow in a car on the train that is carrying Nolan. Oko and the gang can communicate telepathically, and other members of the gang are in place on the ridge and a mile ahead of the train with plans to stop the train with the help of Breeches blowing up an upcoming bridge. The trio makes their way toward the back of the train, where they assume Nolan is being held, and Umezawa attempts to pick a lock with the device he previously used in Graywater’s office to the find the sixth key. While Umezawa tries to unlock the door, the gang’s ongoing telepathic communication is hijacked by Gisa and Geralf’s constant bickering, leading to Gisa raising her army of zombies ahead of schedule, which unleashes a terrible scream and alerts the train guards. Breeches detonates the explosives at the bridge, but guards on the train confront the group and shoot the lockpicker in the shoulder. Kellan and Oko subdue the two guards, but now need a new way to get to the car that contains Nolan. They leave Umezawa in the current car as they break the windows and climb atop the car.

Kellan spots the final overnight car that typically holds the prisoners and the father and son team makes its way to it, knowing they need to find Nolan and figure out a way to stop the speeding train before it flies off the rails at the destroyed bridge up ahead. Guards make it to the rooves of the cars and attack Kellan and Oko, but Gisa’s undead engage the guards, leaving Oko and Kellan to regroup and enter the car with Nolan and four guards. Oko, still using the illusion of a Sterling guard, tells them they need to help fight the ghouls, but as they exit the car, Kellan knocks the three that listen off the train. Oko deals with the final guard and Kellan joins him inside the car as they meet Nolan. With the train barreling toward the cliff, Annie and Fortune ride up to the car and Kellan and Oko help get Umezawa and Nolan onto the mount to safety.

Kellan and Oko jump off the train and Kellan insists they have to save the passengers of the train — something Oko kept saying they would do after they found Nolan. But Sterling Company guards appear in the distance and Oko flees. Kellan uses his magic to form vines that grab the train, but he struggles to hold it for long. Annie and Fortune return after leaving Nolan and Umezawa with the gang. Annie tells the passengers to exit the train and as the last one gets off, Kellan loses his grip on the train and it plummets off the cliff. With the passengers saved, Kellan jumps on Fortune and they escape as the guards arrive on the scene.
