Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has revealed tons new information, including card previews, 2025 set names, and much more for upcoming Magic: The Gathering releases, live from MagicCon: Las Vegas.
General Announcements
- Universes Beyond sets will be Standard legal starting in 2025 with the release of MTG x Final Fantasy.
- Equal number of in-world Magic sets and Universes Beyond sets released each year.
- MSRP will be returning for Play Booster packs and Commander decks starting with Magic Foundations.
- Standard will change to a calendar year rotation schedule in 2027.
- New Lorwyn set pushed to first set of 2026
- Full Pioneer format coming to MTG Arena December 10, 2024 with release of Pioneer Masters.
Magic Foundations
Described as the “quintessential Magic set,” Magic Foundations is the final set release of 2024, will be legal for five years instead of the normal three, and is designed to be the backbone of the new Standard format.
Previews
According to Magic Head Designer, Mark Rosewater, some classic Standard cards were tested and found to be too weak for today’s Standard, and thus they were reworked into more playable versions that still keep the essence of the original. Refute (above) is an example of such a rework, an upgraded version of the classic counterspell, Cancel.

Foundations Beginner Box
10 themed Jumpstart-style packs designed for teaching new players.
Starter Collection
The Magic Foundations Starter Collections includes “350+ cards to get their collection started, basic lands, as well as helpful guides for building a deck, and 3 Play Boosters!”
2025 Set Releases
Innistrad Remastered
Will introduce “Headliners” – one card per set that will be “a new Booster Fun feature beginning with Innistrad Remastered. It’s a single card from the set that has been illustrated, crafted with foil treatment, and sometimes even serialized like Edgar Markov, all to be the most exciting card to collect in a release. You’ll see more headliner cards across 2025 and beyond.”
