Magic: The Gathering Head Designer, Mark Rosewater, has confirmed that there will only be seven major set releases next year.

On October 25 at MagicCon: Las Vegas, Rosewater and members of the Magic design team hosted a panel that gave a first look at Magic’s lineup of upcoming sets for 2025. During the first look panel, fans noticed that the timeline for 2025 showed just seven sets (not including Secret Lair drops) – two less than the nine in 2024 – barring any withheld information.

While responding to a fan’s post on his Blogatog that expressed concern with the rapid pace of the game’s card pool expansion (namely supplemental premium sets and Universes Beyond), Rosewater clarified that Magic would indeed have just seven major set releases in 2025, and only six that would introduce new cards to the game (Innistrad Remastered will contain only reprints).

Coupled with other recently-announced changes such as the return to manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) with the release of Foundations next week and future Universes Beyond sets being Standard-legal starting with Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy in 2025, it’s clear that the Magic Design Team and Wizards of the Coast have been listening closely to community feedback and are taking steps to make Magic more accessible to players of every investment level.
