First introduced in Strixhaven: School of Mages over two years ago, Lesson spells are finally returning in Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender!
While Learn spells won’t be appearing in this set, Lessons like Elemental Teachings are poised to do just fine on their own. A five-mana instant, Elemental Teachings offers a new take on the classic “big mana” ramp spells, which have traditionally been sorcery speed.
No longer priced into ramping during the main phase, players can hold up interaction and wait to accelerate on their opponent’s end step, then untap with seven or more mana. Additionally, even the “downside” of the opponent choosing which two lands go to the graveyard can be valuable in the right deck or paired with cards like Crucible of Worlds or Icetill Explorer.
