Welcome back to the How to Play Magic: The Gathering series from Star City Games. If you need to catch up, you can check out the previous article, on Magic: The Gathering Online aka Magic Online or MTGO, or start at the beginning with The Basics.
Today, we’ll cover how to use MTG Arena, one of two ways to play Magic digitally, the other being MTGO.
What Sets MTG Arena Apart
While many players love Magic for the way it brings people together to play with friends, sometimes you don’t always have the chance to play in person. When you really want to battle but can’t get your group together or can’t make it to a game store, digital Magic has you covered. MTG Arena is the latest digital offering from Magic. It lets you play from your computer and even your phone or tablet.
MTG Arena lets you play Magic anywhere with quick and crisp gameplay and easy-to-use controls. You can play Standard, Historic, Brawl, Sealed, and Draft on Arena anytime with friends via direct challenge or with new opponents within seconds in ranked or unranked queues.
MTG Arena has all the sets dating back to Dominaria and continuously gets injections of older cards into the program. Building decks, browsing your collection, and getting into the action is fast and easy. MTG Arena is free to play, but players can purchase packs, enter drafts, and upgrade visuals with extras like cosmetics for gems purchased through the store.
From New Player to Mythic
MTG Arena has tutorials and Starter Decks for new players, making it a great place to learn how to play. Once you got the handle of the game, you can jump right into ranked matches to try to climb the ladder all the way up to Mythic in Constructed or Limited.
Rank up in Standard or Historic to claim prizes at the end of each month, or try your hand in Draft, where winning can also earn you additional packs and gems. Players also get daily quests they can complete to earn gold, which can be used to buy packs, enter events, and acquire card styles.
That Custom Look
Players can customize their cosmetics and look of the game by changing their “sleeves” or card backs, avatars, and pets. Interact with other players through emotes and stickers unlocked through event or mastery pass rewards. New sets hit MTG Arena first, allowing users to get their hands on the digital cards before anyone else.
A Digital Experience for All
Whether you like tuning the strongest Constructed decks, Cube Drafting, or even playing casual and fun events, MTG Arena has something for everyone looking to play Magic at home or on the go.
If you want to get started, download MTG Arena for PC, Mac, IOS, or Android at magic.wizards.com/mtgarena or through the app store on your mobile device.
