5 Ravnica: Clue Edition Legends You Should Make Your MTG Commander

Chase Carroll highlights five legendary creatures of MTG’s Ravnica: Clue Edition that would make excellent answers to the question, “So, what are you playing?”

Today is an exciting day because Ravnica: Clue Edition drops this weekend. This is a unique product that mashes together two of Hasbro’s IPs to make an IP baby. The best way for me to describe this product is essentially Clue-themed Jumpstart. It’s definitely interesting, and I am curious as to how the public will receive it upon release weekend.

That being said, as a Commander player, I do have to highlight some of the legendary creatures exclusive to this product. There are nine brand-new potential commanders, and there are definitely hits and misses. Let’s ignore the misses, and instead feature five of my favorite Commanders that really hit the ground running.

Emissary Green

Emissary Green

Let’s start out strong with Emissary Green. For those who may be unaware, Emissary Green is a reference to Mr. Green from the Clue board game, who’s turned into Mayor Green in the 2023 update. (This is the case for all of the other color namesake legendaries on this list. Personally, I really enjoy this tie-in to the IP, but to each their own.)

When it comes to Green, I have to say that I really adore this card. It brings back voting, a mechanic I really enjoy. Emissary Green is basically the bread and butter of his color identity, as he focuses on creating tokens and +1/+1 counters. This deck will be a powerhouse with things like Doubling Season; Pir, Imaginative Rascal; and Bootleggers’ Stash. I appreciate the integration of voting in such a product, and really hope we see more in the future.

Magic Card Back

Next up, we have my favorite out of all the color-named characters. Headliner Scarlett is such an incredibly fun card to force in the command zone. Sure, at first glance she seems better for the 99, but I recently brewed her during one of my streams, and she can be disgusting in the proper build. Making token copies and blinking her can make it so no one can block your onslaught of creatures, be they big or small.

I also appreciate that she has her own form of card draw by allowing you to cast things from exile. This too can be integrated into her deck to get insane value from cards like Laelia, the Blade Reforged; Iraxxa, Empress of Mars; Wild-Magic Sorcerer; and Passionate Archaeologist. I just know this deck can shine, and I think Headliner Scarlett deserves her time in the spotlight.

Magic Card Back

When I tell you that this new Lonis changed my opinion about Simic, I’m not joking. This is one of the better Simic commanders printed in recent times. I love this card so much, I already have a deck built. Lonis, Genetics Expert is just that good.

Lonis cares about counters and Clue tokens. Sure, he may have evolve, but you’re in Simic colors, so you never really have to worry about +1/+1 counters. The more counters he gets, the more Clues you get. The more Clues you crack, the bigger your other creatures get. It’s so simplistic and yet so disgusting. I’ve piloted this deck a few times already and can confirm that Lonis is that guy. He shines alongside the likes of Kami of Whispered Hopes, Extruder, Tangletrove Kelp, and Displaced Dinosaurs (to name a few). If I can leave any lasting impression on you with this article, it’s to get Lonis, Genetics Expert. This is a house of a card.

Apothecary White

Apothecary White

Now let’s sashay into Apothecary White. This one took a little bit of time for me to warm up to. Maybe I still have a bad taste in my mouth after diving a little too deep into the Food tokens of Wilds of Eldraine. However, there is more than meets the eye when it comes to Food and White.

White turns those Food tokens into creature tokens. She literally turns something I don’t love and makes it something I adore. A deck with her at the helm enjoys Nuka-Cola Vending Machine; Anointed Procession; Mondrak, Glory Dominus; and Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation (for those Humans you will inevitably make). I think at first glance people will write off Apothecary White as just another Food commander, but don’t discount her. I see greatness in her future.

Senator Peacock

Senator Peacock

Lastly, we have the political princess herself: Senator Peacock. This card was one of the first Clue legendaries to be revealed to us, so we’ve definitely had some time to get used to her. In fact, we brewed her on my stream a few days after she was revealed to us. Since we had no real access to Murders at Karlov Manor cards yet, our card pool was extremely limited. That doesn’t make her shine less, though.

When you sacrifice Clues, you can make some of your creatures unblock able. When you already have access to things like Cyberdrive Awakener, Tangletrove Kelp, and Kappa Cannoneer, you have an incredibly strong foundation for a deck. While I have yet to build my particular brew, I would really like to see someone pilot Peacock in one of my future pods. I think she has a lot of potential as a commander rather than a piece in the 99.

Get a Clue

While I am not one to applaud seeing unique cards available in a special product, I must say that I greatly enjoy the designs of these cards. For me to like half of them is honestly surprising. With Ravnica: Clue Edition dropping this weekend, I am interested in seeing how people react to these new pieces, whether you’re a fan of Clue or simply want to try taking a crack at getting a gorgeous new shockland. Who knows…maybe we will get Monopoly edition in the future. (I jest.) Happy sleuthing, deckbuilders.
