Despite the secrecy surrounding it’s gameplay, Disney’s upcoming trading card game (TCG), Lorcana, is already experiencing an unprecedented boom on online marketplaces.
When Lorcana debuted at Disney’s D23 expo last year, a limited number of 1st edition collector sets featuring seven cards were given away to attendees. Now, as Lorcana nears its gameplay reveal (set for Spring) and full launch this August, the demand for these 1st edition cards, especially the highly graded ones, has exploded on eBay.
As of today, the biggest sale for a full GEM MINT PSA 10 set topped out at a staggering $18,999, but as more collectors get their sets graded and more information on the game becomes available, there’s no telling how high the demand – and price tags – will go.
While the bar has been set at $19,000, this sale was just one of dozens of recent Lorcana sales on eBay averaging five-figures.
While complete sets are always going to fetch higher prices on average, cards being sold solo are still demanding exuberant prices.
As the hype for Lorcana continues to build, some have expressed concern over these prices and collector demand. Back in 2020, the Pokémon TCG experienced higher-than-expected demand, and as such scalping became a huge problem. Thankfully, Lorcana’s social media team has confirmed that the cards included in the 1st edition collector set are not mechanically unique to the versions that will be available in the game’s first set – The First Chapter – with the only difference being the main set versions won’t have the same foiling treatment or 1st edition/D23 stamps.
Lorcana developers have also stated they plan to never print mechanically unique promotional cards, which is fantastic for players as it removes an otherwise difficult barrier to entry.
