Wednesday, May 12th – I’m really excited about playing Magic right now. I know this isn’t news. I’m always pretty excited about playing Magic. It’s just that I’m excited about playing Standard, and I haven’t said that in a long time. There’s more going on than just Standard, of course…

The Long & Winding Road – Oath 2: Electric Boogaloo

Monday, May 3rd – The last time I played Oath of Druids in a Vintage tournament was back on January 3rd. That tournament capped a three-tournament streak with Oath where my overall record was 11-1-5 in the Swiss rounds, with two finals splits and a top 8. It seemed like Oath was about to conquer Vintage, but life suddenly became much more difficult as Dredge, Noble Fish, and MUD flexed their muscle and made life hard for Oath players.

Friday, April 30th – Today, I want to talk about Legacy. I want to do so specifically in light of Max McCall’s article, Legacy: Attacking is Miserable…

The Long & Winding Road – Eldrazi Limited: First Impressions

The StarCityGames.com Open Series returns to Atlanta!
Friday, April 23rd – I didn’t realize how long it’d been since I played Limited until I sat down with my packs last Saturday morning at the Rise of the Eldrazi Prerelease. Prereleases are always a good time, and I love me some giant monsters, so I was extra-pumped for this one. After cracking my packs and sorting out the colors, I took a look at the rares and the Eldrazi. Here’s what I had to work with…

The Long & Winding Road – Don’t Feed the Animals: Top 8 with Legacy Zoo

The StarCityGames.com Open Series returns to Atlanta!
Monday, April 19th – The last two times I played Legacy, I tried two different Dredge builds, and wasn’t happy with either of them. It could be that I’m too used to the Vintage version, but I found that I was struggling with a number of things…

The Long & Winding Road – Night of the Living Dead: The Ultimate Dredge Primer (Part 2)

Read Matt Elias every week... at StarCityGames.com!
Monday, April 5th – Last week, I reviewed the cards that make up Vintage Dredge and some of the ways in which the deck functions. Today, we’ll move on to looking at specific decks, sideboarding, and how to design a Dredge deck that’s right for your metagame.

Tuesday, March 30th – Whether you’ve never heard of Dredge, are casually familiar with it from other formats, or consider yourself an experienced Vintage Dredge player, this is perhaps the most comprehensive look at the Dredge strategy in Vintage ever produced. I’m going to break the deck down into its parts, and provide strategy and rules tips, as well as example versions of the different Dredge strategies.

The Long & Winding Road – Playing in the MUD

Friday, March 26th – At its core, Vintage isn’t really different than other formats. You can exploit the metagame using deck choice and deck design; proper deck choice and design, and minimizing play mistakes, will lead to tournament results. If you build your deck to attack certain elements of the metagame, and face those elements, you’ll do well.

The Long & Winding Road – Devil May Cry / My Name is MUD

03162010orlandoheader.gifMonday, March 15th – A little over a year ago, when I started writing for this website, I actually thought about giving up the game again. My Extended PTQ results were awful, and any time I lost a game while at a PTQ, booster draft, or playing FNM, I beat myself up, badly. I felt obligated to do well as a writer, embarrassed by misplays, and under a lot of pressure to do “something” with the game

The Long & Winding Road -Vintage Opens Up: The Philly Open V

StarCityGames.com Open Series: Indianapolis on March 13-14
Monday, March 8th – Last week, I gave a recap of my personal performance in the Vintage portion of the Philly Open V, an 82-player Vintage tournament in Philadelphia. This week, I’m going to pull back and give you the broader picture, as I did with the Philly Open IV last November.

The Long & Winding Road – The City of Zombie Love

StarCityGames.com Open Series: Indianapolis on March 13-14
Tuesday, March 2nd – Hi, my name is Matt, and I play Dredge. Last Saturday, 82 players competed in the Vintage portion of the Philly Open V at the Philadelphia Convention Center, making for one of the larger American Vintage tournaments of the past year…

The Long & Winding Road – Vintage: Gateway Decks

SCG Open Richmond!

Monday, February 22nd – As I’ve taken to writing about primarily Vintage over the past six months, one of the most common questions I’ve received is, “I’m interested in playing in a Vintage tournament but I have no idea how to get into the format – where should I start?” My article today is going to cover that topic.

The Long & Winding Road – Legacy Gold and Vintage Card Tricks

SCG Open Richmond!

Tuesday, February 16th – I tried to decide between two topics for this week: A look at the increasing value of Legacy staples, and a tournament report from the Vintage event in Harrisburg, PA on 1/31. Since I couldn’t decide, I thought I’d just cover both…

The Long & Winding Road – Introducing Two Card Monte: A Vintage Primer

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Thursday, February 11th – It is extremely hard to innovate new strategies in Vintage. Although Vintage is the most inclusive of the Magic formats in terms of raw card pool, in reality it has a relatively small pool of playable cards. Vintage is made up of only the best of Magic, resulting in a set of decks that have minor differences, but are built around the same core of cards.

The Long & Winding Road – Fishing in NY

Grand Prix: Oakland!

Monday, February 1st -Thada Adel, Acquisitor is interesting because of its versatility. If you connect early against Workshops, you could steal a Crucible of Worlds to combat Smokestack. Against Oath of Druids and Tezzeret, you can attack Time Vault / Voltaic Key (and even assemble it on your side with just two hits); against The Deck and Tezzeret, you can also remove Tinker targets from the game to cut off that avenue of attack.
