AuthorBennie Smith

Bennie Smith began playing Magic in 1994 and started writing about it shortly after. A Virginia State Champion, he enjoys few things better than winning at tournaments with home brews. Commander is one of those things. He loved the format so much he literally wrote the book on it: The Complete Commander.

Friday, September 18th – Are we having State Champs this year? According to the Twitter buzz from some folks at Wizards the answer is… maybe. For players like me, what I loosely call the “casually competitive” crowd, States was the highlight of the year. With Standard in massive flux from the rotation, it often felt like anything was possible… with the right mix of luck and new card technology, you could be champ.

Friday, September 11th – Zendikar seems an environment tailor-made to play towards Green’s strengths. Is that going to be the case, or is Wizards going to rob that piece of the pie and distribute it across multiple colors in the name of making the themes work no matter what colors you play?

Friday, September 4th – Today, I wrap up the EDH primer and do a walk through in how I go about building an EDH deck. This three-part series was written with people new to the format in mind, but with the hope that even veteran players will find parts interesting and thought-provoking.

Friday, August 28th – I just wanted to thank everyone for their great feedback in the forums the past week regarding Part 1 of my EDH primer – you all certainly provided some fantastic information for EDH fans new and old to further enrich the community that’s sprung up around this fun format!

Friday, August 21st – My column’s “focus” can be said to be What Interests Bennie in the Magic World Today? Once EDH became a big part of my life, I ended up providing a fair amount of EDH content in my columns, and each time I’d get a bunch of feedback from readers who really enjoyed reading about the format.

You Lika The Juice? – Thousand Proof (and Sachi EDH)

Friday, August 14th – Last week I was musing on playing some sort of Green-based deck with Thousand Year Elixir, and while they all seemed “cool” to some degree, I was also somewhat worried about not having any sort of removal spell available. It would be a bit embarrassing to be fiddling around with my Elf deck and then have someone else “go off” with their Elf combo deck and kill me and I have nothing to do.

Friday, August 7th – You pretty much have to eat, drink and sleep Magic to get on the Pro Tour. That was the conceit that I kept snug in my mind in explaining my relative lack of success. Until I ran across this Tweet on July 23rd: “Guess who just won the last LCQ of the day? Evan Erwin just Q’d for Nats!”

Friday, July 31st – I’ve decided to power down my critique of the current Standard for the duration, even while some of the bigger names in Magic analysis seem to be coming ‘round to my way of thinking. Yes, I still think it sucks, but since I’m not going to be competing in any big tournaments with anything large on the line, why let it bother me?

Friday, July 24th – I love the Treefolk tribal stuff. Sadly, unlike Elementals, Treefolk doesn’t seem to have the juice to really kick ass outside of Doran, and he typically surrounds himself with a more able supporting cast.

Friday, July 17th – The past couple of columns I took a look at Magic 2010 in broad strokes; now that the set is released and I’ve had a chance to hold some of the cards in my hand and play with them, I figured I’d do an overview of the specific cards that have my attention, and touch on the Magic2010 prerelease in Richmond. Let’s jump right in!

Friday, July 10th – Regular readers know I’m not exactly thrilled with the Standard format right now, especially since enough half-way decent players netdeck the usual Tier 1 suspects at my local tournaments so that any interesting “Tier X” decks I cook up tend to end up getting crushed along the way.

Friday, July 3rd – Given that there are always a few hiccups in the spoilers leading up to the prerelease, I thought it might be handy to look at M10 broadly – from a 5000-foot level, as it were – and read what the tea leaves tell us regarding what the good folk at Wizards have in mind for the game as they reboot the Core set.

Friday, June 26th – About 10 years ago, I traded for a Ring of Ma’rûf. After I made the trade, I held it up close to my face, studying it closely. Admiring the weird face the ring made. Marveling at the italicized rules text that said outside of the game.

Friday, June 19th – We had a lively M10 rules debate in the forum of last week’s column, and Patrick Chapin even dropped in with a lengthy defense of the rules changes. One tangent was fired off by my comment about how awesome I thought the new M10 dual lands were…

Friday, June 12th – As I’m writing my column this week, big news is busting out all over pretty much demanding some sort of response, so before I get into the deck I played at FNM last week, I felt like I needed to touch on the big items first…
