AuthorAbe Sargent

A Commander and casual Magic lover who calls all of West Virginia his hometown, Abe Sargent moved to Michigan for a time, working there for eleven years before heading off to seminary in the North Philly suburbs before finally heading to southwestern Connecticut. He's still not sure how a state the size of Connecticut has its own distinct regions. If you face Abe in a duel, be prepared to face his notorious work of art, Abe's Deck of Happiness and Joy.

The Kitchen Table #262 – Tempest and Prismatic

Tuesday, December 2nd – In what is increasingly becoming a trend, today I want to post a set review for the upcoming Tempest set, which will be released on Dec 8 online. Just like my previous set reviews of Weatherlight or Masters Edition, this one focuses on the value of Tempest in Prismatic, although I will also make mention of the occasional common that would be valuable in Pauper Prismatic Singleton.

The Kitchen Table #261 – A Hypothetical Masters Edition 3

Thursday, November 27th – Wizards of the Coast has been making sets called Masters Edition for online consumption, consisting of cards from before Mirage and the Portal sets. These sets have new commonalities, and give players a chance to open up some of the old classics, but they come with a cost. The older cards do not meet the demands of the modern color pie, so the drafts are a bit wonky. (Which I love!) Also, the sets are very limited in their release, so you have to get the goods while you can.

The Kitchen Table #260 – The Compendium of Alternate Formats, Entry Three C: New York Format Expanded

Thursday, November 20th – Back in 2003, I brought the New York Format out of obscurity and into my Compendium as a legitimate alternative to the normal formats out there. However, after a bunch of intervening years adding significantly more cards to the format, I realized that I needed to edit the format for today’s audiences…

Thursday, November 13th – Hello all, and welcome back to the format that explores and discovers the realm of the casual. Today, I want to dial the clock back to one of my earlier entries in the Compendium and revamp it for the modern day. I want to talk about the New York Format.

The Kitchen Table #258 – The Baton of Morale Syndrome

Thursday, November 6th – Today I want to talk about some clever, older, largely unknown cards that you can unveil on your playgroup to a great surprise. No one will claim these cards are amazingly powerful, or brokenly good… they are just unexpected or subtly strong.

The Kitchen Table #257 – Abe’s Prismatic Deck

Thursday, October 30th – As any long time reader of my column will know, I love Five Color. I absolutely adore it! I also dig the online variant, Prismatic. Today, I thought it would be fun to look at my Prismatic deck, and see the cards I run.

The Kitchen Table #256 – Re-Arting Your Cards

Thursday, October 23rd – In Five Color, there has been a long and respected history of re-arting your cards. When you re-art your card, you are adding or deducting from the published art in one of many ways. You might be adding a new spin on the art, or you might be enhancing the color in a picture. What my playgroup began to do was to re-art by deduction instead of adding more.

The Kitchen Table #255 – The Compendium of Alternate Formats, Entry #11: Pauper Prismatic Singleton

Thursday, October 16th – Today I want to focus on an online format from the casual rooms, and then bring it offline for all to enjoy. There is an online variant of Five Color called Prismatic. Highlander is referred to as Singleton. Pauper is a variant of Peasant Magic that simply allows only commons instead of a few uncommons. What some casual players have been doing online is combining these three formats into one, called PPS…

The Kitchen Table #254 – Shards of Alara Decks

Friday, October 10th – Today, I want to take a simple idea for the article. With the brand new set on the shelves, I would like to build several decks that revolve around the new cards. Some decks may just have a single card from Shards of Alara, whereas others might be packed with new goodies…

Thursday, September 25th – Hello my friends, and welcome back to the column dedicated to the casual. My name is Abe and I am your DJ, spinning you decks from around the Casualverse. Today I want to hit up one of my favorite formats, Peasant Magic. Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks gave us a lot of fun cards for our decks, and in Peasant Magic, they gave us some great tools…

Thursday, September 11th – I have built hundreds of decks during my time as a writer here at StarCityGames.com. What I intend to do today is very simple. I am going to take some of the cards off my top 10 favorite cards list, and build a deck around them. Do you know that despite my regularly professed love for Scarwood Bandits in this column, that I have never built a deck around them? That ends today.

The Kitchen Table #249 – Casual Thoughts

Thursday, September 4th – Hello folks, and welcome back to the final article before my 250th article next week. Instead of the normal full length article today, I want to write up several topics of recent concern, praise, and import to myself. From the Casual Banned and Restricted list, to a request to all gaming sites on behalf of casual players, I have several things here. So, without further ado, let’s get started.

The Kitchen Table #248 – Art Attack!

Thursday, August 28th – For as long as I have played Magic (since Summer 1995), I have heard people talk about the art on cards. We talked about the good art, and we talked about the bad art. Today, I want to do something very simple. I will tell you what my favorite pieces of artwork are, and why I like them so much.
