With Abzan Rally potentially ready to take over Standard this weekend at #PTOrigins and #SCGRegionals, Sam asks an unconventional question – could the deck make it in Modern as well?
Well, that second game was pretty embarrassing but at least it looks like the deck functions. The first game made me wonder if I want Lotleth Troll or something in case I draw too many pieces and need to get them all in my graveyard faster.
Round Two
I’m not sure if it’s weirder to have two opponents in a row miss their first land drop… or that somehow my opponent failed to kill me in game two.
After this match I decided to try to changing the deck around. It felt like I needed more ways to go through a lot of different cards to get all the pieces together, so I tried adding Golgari Grave-Troll to the mix:
This matchup felt pretty good; outside of getting Wastelanded to oblivion by Ghost Quarters, they don’t have a particularly fast clock and most of their hate doesn’t interact with me. Rest in Peace could be a problem, but having access to a lot of Qasali Pridemages helps.
The difference between games one and two there really highlighted how much I don’t like drawing Golgari Grave-Troll and do like drawing Gather the Pack, which made my next change, adding Commune with the Gods, easy to make:
I was a little surprised at the end of both games. In game one I expected my opponent to have a counterspell, and in game two I didn’t expect a concession there, but it makes sense.
I’m pretty sure I like this configuration of the deck a lot more than the others. Having a lot more spells that just dump cards into the graveyard which can also potentially find Eternal Witness feels like exactly the right place to be.
The numbers are still rough and the matches were weird, but the deck seems to be off to a promising start.
