Video Daily Digest: Fore-Ofs

Is As Foretold the real deal in Modern or not? Someone tell us the correct build! Because as sweet as all these lists are, we want to know the list that will crush SCG Louisville! Ross Merriam does his part for the cause here!

Standard has been the focus since the release of Amonkhet for obvious
reasons, but with #SCGKY coming up this weekend we’re finally going to get
to see the latest set’s effect on Modern.

Unlike Standard, new sets typically don’t have a huge impact on the next
smallest format, and I don’t expect that to change here, but there are
still a few cards that will see play and that can be enough to dramatically
shift the landscape of the metagame. Today’s deck highlights one of those
potential standouts: As Foretold.

We’re all familiar with the use of cascade cards to cast Ancestral Vision
without waiting an agonizing four turns and now Modern has a useful tool to
provide the exact same instant gratification. Immediately upon casting the
enchantment you can use its ability to cast a spell with converted mana
cost zero and three mana to draw three cards would be perfectly fine, but
this is a two-card combo, so we need a little bit more to make it
worthwhile.

Fortunately, As Foretold only gets better from there, letting you cast
progressively more expensive cards so you can double spell efficiently,
especially with counterspells, or use your lands for other purposes, like
activating and attacking with Celestial Colonnade much earlier than your
opponent is prepared for. And because As Foretold lets you cast a spell on
your opponent’s turn too, the effective mana you generate can quickly
snowball out of control.

That makes it perfect for control decks in Modern that often struggle with
applying pressure while answering the wide variety of threats your
opponents can produce. With As Foretold it’s no longer an agonizing
decision that you may get punished for either way, you just get to do both
things and Hakuna Matata, no more worries.

You also get to play some more powerful spells without irreparably damaging
your curve, as we can see in this list with the many sweepers and two
copies of Detention Sphere as a catch-all. As Foretold opens up the toolbox
for control decks like this in Modern, and I for one am excited to see
where they go.
