So Many Insane Plays – The Complete Vintage Checklist

SCG 10K Philadelphia... the first major event featuring Zendikar!Monday, October 5th – In today’s So Many Insane Plays, Stephen Menendian brings us a fantastic resource: a complete list of Vintage playable cards! While this list will obviously stir debate, he’s provided an outstanding blueprint for anyone interested in playing Magic’s most broken format. Plus, some prerelease talk too!

I played Limited for only the second time since the last Magic Invitational this past weekend, for the Zendikar prerelease. I was not going to miss that tournament! I love prereleases, especially since Wizards decentralized them. However, the last few have fallen on bad weekends in my schedule. I was geared up for Zendikar, and hoped that someone at my local store would open some ‘priceless treasure.’

Here was my card pool:

Green:
Baloth Woodcrasher
Nissa Revane
Nissa’s Chosen
Oran-Rief Recluse
Oran-Rief Survivalist
2 Quest for the Gemblades
Relic Crush
Savage Silhouette
Tanglesap
Vines of Vastwood

Red:
Demolish
Goblin Bushwhacker
Goblin Ruinblaster
2 Goblin Shortcutter
Highland Berserker
Molten Ravager
2 Plated Geopede
Runeflare Trap
Seismic Shudder
Zektar Shrine Expedition

White:
3 Arrow Volley Trap
Caravan Hurda
2 Kor Cartographer
2 Kor Duelist
1 Kor Sanctifier
Journey to Nowhere
2 Ondu Cleric
Pillarfield Ox
Sunspring Expedition

Black:
2 Blood Seeker
Bog Tatters
2 Crypt Ripper
2 Giant Scorpion
Guul Draz Vampire
Halo Hunter
Heartstabber Mosquito
2 Hideous End
Mindless Null
Mind Sludge
Nimana Sell-Sword
Quest for the Gravelord
Soul Stair Expedition
Surrakar Marauder
Vampire’s Bite

Blue:
Aether Figment
Caller of Gales
Kraken Hatchling
2 Hedron Crab
Lethargy Trap
2 Reckless Scholar
2 Rite of Replication
Quest for Ancients
Sky Ruin Drake
Spreading Seas
Summoner’s Bane
Tempest Owl
Welkin Tern

Artifacts:
Adventuring Gear
Blazing Torch
Expedition Map
Explorer’s Scope
Spidersilk Net

Land:
Kabira Crossroads
Graypelt Refuge
Teetering Peaks
Turntimber Grove
Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle

With that card pool, what colors do you use? I eliminated Green as an option because I had so few Green cards, let alone playables. On the flip side, Black seemed like my strongest color, with double Hideous End, Halo Hunter, and the Mosquito, among other cards. However, White also had plenty of removal. I had three Volley Traps in White, and Journey to Nowhere. And like Black, White also had beef, although not as much. However, the more I thought about it, the less certain I was that Volley Trap would be that great. It felt mostly like a five-mana four damage spell, which isn’t bad by any means, but it’s not that exciting either.

My initial instinct was to build a R/B speedy beatdown deck. I had 2 Plated Geopede and two Goblin Shortcutter, as well as Electropotence and Zektar Shrine, all of which would support my Black creatures like Guul Draz Vampire. But then I started to think more carefully about my Blue options, and specifically the effect of Rite of Replication.

One of the things I like best about this format is that mid- and late-game land drops are never dead. With all of the landfall abilities throughout the card pool, each land drop would be meaningful. This would also support cards like Crypt Ripper. I knew that I’d be tilting my mana upward if there was a question about it.

But that also meant that Rite of Replication could actually be kickable. And then it struck me: Rite of Replication gives me inevitability in the Florian sense of Psychatog. If I could play a control deck, trading one-for-one, I would eventually win. Not to mention, Replicating Nimana Sell-Sword with kicker would be a super-game winner.

I wasn’t sure if UB was better than a fast RB deck, or even a RW or BW deck, but it seemed like a lot more fun. I had Summoner’s Bane, which was another great card, and another reason to pull me into Blue. Because I wanted to focus on avoiding quick losses, I decided not to run the Hedron Crabs, but I would run the 0/4 wall, which I was criticized for including. I reasoned that the 0/4 wall would hold off most attacks, particularly since attacking into it would mean that I could attack with other creatures unhindered, giving me the advantage. I also ran the Scorpions for the same reason. But winning the long-game is risky when you could face opponents with plenty of burn. That’s one reason I ran Vampire’s Bite: the giant growth boost is nice, but the lifelink is a huge tempo swing in your favor. That’s also another reason why I put so much of my faith in Crypt Ripper, which was rewarded.

Here was my deck:

9 Swamp
9 Island
2 Crypt Ripper
2 Giant Scorpion
Halo Hunter
Heartstabber Mosquito
2 Hideous End
Nimana Sell-Sword
Soul Stair Expedition
Surrakar Marauder
Vampire’s Bite
Kraken Hatchling
2 Reckless Scholar
2 Rite of Replication
Sky Ruin Drake
Summoner’s Bane
Welkin Tern
Adventuring Gear
Blazing Torch

Frequently Sideboarded cards:
Mind Sludge
Bog Tatters
Spidersilk Net

The deck ran very well. I won most of my games through Crypt Ripper, which was insane. It’s arguable I should have had Mind Sludge maindeck. I was concerned about aggressive Red or Green decks. Halo Hunter was hilarious in killing both the rare and the uncommon Angel during the tournament.

I went 4-1 and placed 5th of 27th (on tiebreaks), and won two packs, one of which had Scalding Tarn. Pretty sweet.

The Vintage Checklist

I was at Patrick’s place a little over a week ago, in Detroit co-teaching a class at Wayne State. When we walked into his apartment, there was a pile of old Duelists on the floor that his mother had just mailed to him. I picked them up like I’d just walked into the vault of the National Archives, scanning tattered pages of Magic history, each issue earlier than the first. I stopped at an issue that coincided with the release of Fallen Empires, both to read an interview about the origin of Magic from some of Alpha’s original test team and the errata section, which indeed included information on Transmute Artifact that confirms the claims of those who argue that Transmute Artifact remains powered errated and should work like Flash. But in the back of the magazine, there was a Fallen Empires checklist. Only about two dozen cards were checked off by the teenage Chapin. Patrick inspected the magazine to confirm this fun discovery.

After my set reviews, I sometimes receive requests for a comprehensive list of Vintage cards to acquire. I’ve always politely ignored such requests, thinking them too difficult, if not impossible, to fulfill. A few years ago, my editor prodded me into writing introductory pieces on Vintage, including a piece on learning common Vintage terminology. This led to my annual “Ultimate Vintage Primer,” where I go over every deck in the metagame. But to make a checklist of every Vintage playable card is a beast of an entirely different stripe.

First of all, making such a list invites endless debates. Someone will inevitably point out some omission that should have been included. Someone else will point to cards that, in their view, aren’t Vintage playable, and shouldn’t be included. For example, how do you handle a card like Academy Rector or Diminishing Returns, which are playable, but rarely see play? Or what about cards that are in tier 2 decks at best, but sometimes win tournaments in certain environments, like Goblins? Or what about cards that are played, albeit rarely, in major archetypes, like In the Eye of Chaos? Similarly, what about cards that are playable, but aren’t seeing play because of the particular composition and contours of the metagame, like In the Eye of Chaos, but are definitely good enough to see play, and are likely to see play in the future? Or how do you deal with cards that used to see a lot of play, but are unlikely to see play in the future because of changes in the banned or restricted list or the metagame, like Triskelavus, who were Slaver targets? Or cards that saw a momentary burst of play, like Strategic Planning, but then quickly faded, with no clear use in the near future?

Then someone will point out that there are different degrees of playability. Jester’s Cap, while played in Vintage, is not played as much nor is as central to the format s Time Vault. Should cards like that be lumped into the same category? But, if I were to draw a line between those cards, on what basis? Any line that I would draw would be open to the same criticisms.

These, and more, are all real problems to drafting a complete Vintage checklist. After much consideration, I ultimately settled on a two-category system that I have keyed below: Commonly Played/Staples versus Niche/Less Commonly Played. I have tried to use recent Vintage Top 8 data, giving particular weight to the last 6-12 months, in determining whether a card is playable, using the extensive Morphling.de Vintage tournament database. But that has not been my only source. As I said, I’m also sure that I’ve missed something. Feel free tell me what I’ve missed in the forums. But recognize that there is a good chance that I’ve intentionally omitted the card. I haven’t simply selected cards that have made Top 8s in the last 6 months or year, but that has been a touchstone for whether a card is included or not.

However, just because a card hasn’t seen play in the last couple of months, that doesn’t mean it won’t in the future. For example, cards like In the Eye of Chaos may not see much play at the moment, but they are certainly positioned to see future play, and are Vintage playable, depending on the shifting composition of the format. I’ve tried to be inclusive rather than exclusive. I’ve included cards in here that may not be played at the moment, but I believe are playable, and would be deck building material in future metagames. That necessarily involves a judgment call.

Also, there may be cards not on this list, already in print, which may emerge in the future. While owning all of these cards will give you 98% of anything you’ll need right now to build whatever you want in Vintage, there will still be cards that will become playable for one reason or another, that are not on this list.

I’ve organized this information in several different ways so that it is most useful to you. First, I’ve organized the cards by set, but listing them by the set printing where they are cheapest. Second, I’ve organized them by color. My hope is that this can be both a database as much as a checklist. There are other interesting tidbits revealed by this list. For example, this checklist illustrates what Vintage really looks like, and in particular how modern it really is. For a format that can use almost every card ever printed, the more recent expansions definitely hold their weight. Mirrodin Block and Time Spiral block have just as many playables, if not more, than Urza Block. And later sets like Lorwyn have more playables than Arabian Nights, Antiquities, or Legends.

Too early to tell, although my set review is a good start.

Without Zendikar, that’s 373 unique cards that make up Vintage, out of a 10,384 legal cards in Vintage (according to Gatherer, and I’m pretty sure it double counts split cards). That makes up about 3.59% of the total card pool.

Until next time…
