Literary Legends

What would characters from classy literature look like as Magic cards?

Last week, I let you know that this week, I’d be looking at what some characters from class literature might look like. I invited you to send in your ideas – and several of you did. Without further ado, let’s get started.

First, some suggestions from loyal readers:

From Andrew Wright:

Sherlock Holmes
Creature – Sleuth Legend
UU Tap: Remove target creature from the game that has dealt damage to another creature this turn.
"The game is afoot!"

The Raven
Creature – Bird Legend
UB, Tap: Tap target creature. That creature does not untap as normal as long as The Raven remains tapped. You may choose not to untap The Raven during your untap step.

Legendary Artifact
6, Tap, Sacrifice Rosebud: Put 3 Fading counters on target creature. That creature gains +X/+X, where X is the number of Fading counters on target creature.
"I guess no one will ever know who or what Rosebud was."

(I assume that the creature is supposed to gain fading.)

Walter Mitty
Creature – Shapeshifter Legend
UUR: Until the end of turn, Walter Mitty loses this ability and gains all abilities of target creature.
If target creature is a Legend, Walter Mitty gets +5/+3 until end of turn.

Next, from Jon:

Creature – Dead Clown
When Yorick enters play, sacrifice Yorick.

Creature – Warrior Prince
Haste, Fading 1

Creature – Smelly Beast
Flanking, Protection from White

Mr. Snrub offers these legends:

Legendary Land
T: Add W to your mana pool.
WW, T: Gain 2 life.
"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure-dome decree"
Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Kubla Khan

Captain Ahab
Creature – Legend
B: Put a -1/-1 counter on target creature and on Captain Ahab.
B, Sacrifice Captain Ahab: Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.
"For hate’s sake, I spit my last breath at thee."
Herman Melville, Moby Dick

Annabelle Lee
Creature – Legend
Anabelle Lee is unblockable.
U, Sacrifice Annabelle Lee: Return target creature to its owner’s hand.
"For the moon never beams without giving me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabelle Lee
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of my beautiful Annabelle Lee."
Edgar Allen Poe, "Annabelle Lee "

(I love this next one…)

Creature – Legendary !!
When come into play CATS, all target opponent’s base are belong to CATS !!
RR, Set up CATS the bomb: Target creature do what you say for 1 turns. At end of turns, make its time. Play this ability only when you are on the way to destruction.
"How are you gentlemen !!"

This, from Israel Marques:

Creature- Legendary Lover
RR, Tap: Romeo deals damage equal to his power to target creature.
WW, Tap: Put a -2/-2 counter on Romeo. Target creature can neither attack while Romeo is untapped, nor block him. If Romeo is put into the graveyard from play, target creature is also placed in the graveyard.

Finally, from Chris Kinney:

Great White Whale
(no creature type given}
Whenever Great White Whale attacks, it does 1 damage to all other creatures.

To finish this up, I’ll offer a couple of my own ideas.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
Creature – Legendary Prince
If Hamlet leaves play, if any player controls Ophelia, Tragic Princess, that player sacrifices Ophelia.
Tap, Sacrifice: Destroy six other target legends. If there are less than six other legends in play, this ability cannot be used.
"To be or not to be, that is the question."

Polonius, Court Advisor
Creature – Legendary Retainer
UU: You and each opponent each draw one card.
UUUU, Tap: Counter target spell that doesn’t target.

Sydney Carton, Emotional Lawyer
Creature – Legendary Lawyer
Tap, Sacrifice: Return two target legend cards from your graveyard into play, or regenerate two target legends.
Tap, Sacrifice: Destroy all creatures that you don’t control. Those creatures cannot be regenerated. All opponents reveal their hands and discard all creature cards. Look at the top three cards of each player’s library. Play this ability as a sorcery and only if you have less than five life.
"It is a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done. It is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known."

Gandalf, the White
Creature – Legendary Wizard
Tap: Gain control of target artifact.
WW: Target creature gains protection from any color until end of turn. Use this ability no more than twice each turn.
Return a creature you control to your hand: Regenerate Gandalf.
"I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me!"

Ebenezer Scrooge, Rich Miser
Creature – Legend
When Ebenezer Scrooge comes into play, target opponent loses three life and you gain three life.
Pay three life, Tap: Gain control of target creature. This creature gains, "During your upkeep, lose one life."

Aeneas, Epic Hero
Creature – Legendary Founder
Tap, Sacrifice a land: Gain control of target land.
GGWW: All other creatures you control gain +1/+1 until end of turn.

Puck, Faerie Player
Creature – Legendary Troublemaker
Tap: Exchange control of target legend you control for target legend opponent controls.

Dracula, Vampire Count
Creature – Legendary Lord
When Dracula comes into play, sacrifice all creatures you control. For each creature sacrificed in this way, put a */* Vampire token into play, where the creature’s power and toughness are equal to the sacrificed creature’s power and toughness.
All Vampires get +1/+1
Tap: Destroy target creature. Put a */* Vampire token into play, where the creature’s power and toughness are equal to the destroyed creature’s power and toughness.

Jekyll, Brilliant Scientist / Hyde, Dark Killer
Creature – Legendary Scientist
When Jekyll/Hyde comes into play, it is Jekyll. During your upkeep, if Jekyll/Hyde is Jekyll, it becomes Hyde, and if Jekyll/Hyde is Hyde, it becomes Jekyll.

When Jekyll/Hyde is Jekyll, its power and toughness are 3/5, and it has the abilities:
Tap: Prevent all damage dealt to target creature or player this turn.
Tap: Put a +2/+2 counter on target creature. That creatures permanently gains protection from a color of your choice. Put a -1/-1 counter on Jekyll (this counter is only in place when Jekyll/Hyde is Jekyll).

When Jekyll/Hyde is Hyde, its power and toughness are 5/3, and it has the abilities:
Hyde can only be blocked by black creatures.
Tap: Destroy target creature. That creature cannot be regenerated.
XX, Tap: Deal X damage to target creature or player. Put X/2 +1/+1 counters on Hyde (these counters are only in place when Jekyll/Hyde is Hyde). Use only black or red mana in this way. Lose X life.

Well, there you go – a look at what some of the world’s classic literary figures might look like if they lived in Dominaria. I hope you enjoyed this little fantasy session. Until next time!
