Financial Value Of Gatecrash X

Ben Bleiweiss reviews the latest spoilers using his long-time experience pricing Magic cards. Here’s what he thinks of Blind Obedience, Army Loyalist, Lord of the Void, and more.

Welcome to week three of the Financial Value of Gatecrash! Spoiler season continues, and there were a handful of new cards previewed over the weekend. Let’s go over them now.
New Cards
Army Loyalist Army Loyalist*

Starting Price: $1

Thoughts: Haste; Battalion – Whenever Army Loyalist* and at least two other creatures attack, creatures you control gain first strike and trample until end of turn and can’t be blocked by tokens this turn.

*Might not be the English name

Bulk rare.

Assemble the Legion

Starting Price: $1

Thoughts:
I’m not sure that Assemble the Legion will be Constructed playable (you don’t start getting creatures until your sixth turn, barring acceleration), but it should be a staple for Commander play. Assemble the Legion can pump out a truly impressive number of creatures, especially if you can get counters on it through other means (Giant Fan?). I expect this to be a casual card that holds value at $1-$2.

Blind Obedience

Starting Price: $2

Thoughts:
Kismet effects have been hit or miss in Constructed play. Blind Obedience is one of the cheaper versions of this effect and is right at home in a deck that wants to keep on attacking each turn. I believe the second ability on Blind Obedience—extort—is what makes this a Standard-playable card. Early in the game, it will let you get extra damage through by taking out blockers for a turn. Later in the game, it will let you get extra damage through just by casting spells. This also stops haste creatures, if you care to play it as a sideboard card. I believe this will hold value and maybe even hit the $3 range.

Lord of the Void {4BBB}

Creature – Demon

Flying
Whenever Lord of the Void deals combat damage to a player, exile the top seven cards of that player’s library, then put a creature card from among them onto the battlefield under your control.

7/7

Lord of the Void

Starting Price: $3

Thoughts:
Lord of the Void is a 7/7 flyer that doesn’t have trample. Chances are, if you’re hitting your opponent with combat damage with your 7/7 flyer, you’re already winning the game—so this is a classic “win-more” effect. I don’t see anything particularly compelling about this card, either for casual or competitive play—so I expect this to drop to the $2 bulk mythic range shortly after release.

Ooze Flux

Starting Price: $0.50

Thoughts:
Bulk rare—at four mana to get this on the board, it’s a little too rough to cast, much less use.

Recap of Spoiled Cards
Aurelia’s Fury

Starting Price: $25

Current Price: $30

Thoughts:
Selling at 30 Euros overseas. Went up to $35 over the weekend, but sales weren’t sustainable yet at that price, so back down to $30 from the initial price of $25. Likely to hit the $40 range right after release but will drop back down to $25-$30 2-3 weeks after release, as 2nd and 3rd wave Gatecrash shipments hit.
